Part of what I like at Paolo's is what some folks don't like. The Funkiness. Paolo replaced the floor in the dining room last year and I miss the holes in the floor. Now you can put your chair anywhere without going tipsy. Yep, the drapes are shabby, the signage poor, but it so fits with Pahoa. The food is still some of the best on BI. Always the freshest ingredients.
I like to sit where I can watch the chefs prepare every dish to order. Paolo makes his pasta fresh and does his own shopping at the Hilo farmer's Market. Yep, if you go at 7 on a Friday or Saturday then service is slow. We always plan on an early arrival when we go to Paolo's.
I have had good meals at Kaleo's too. Hilo Bay Cafe has consistently excellent food. Pescatore has nice ambiance.
The best steak that I have had was at Kiawe Kitchen in Volcano, although they are a bit pricey. Try their crafty Pizza . They are definitely a must try for the restaraunt hoppers. Go early or late here, big rush from the park. While I have had the best Rib-eye there, I have had some mediocre ones too.

My favorite restaurant is our monthly international cooking group....its been a big success so far....for those interested our next meeting is on the 21st which will be menu's from any of Roy Yamaguchi's cook books....any interested persons that love to cook and meet other like foodies - please contact me to join our foodie group.

I certainly agree with Paul! In addition to paying a huge markup on the wine, the biggest problem at the Big Island restaurants (even at the resorrts!) is the improperly stored wine and I can't understand why the retsurants don't invest in portable wine cellars. They are not expensive. I have two at home and store about 60 bottles of wine there. I just grab one of my favorite wine and pay $5.00 at Paolo's to get it open. (BTW, Paolo replaced his stemware based on my recommendation last year.)
Another subject, I wish I could post the photo here! We went to an Italian restaurant in Bali two weeks ago and they had a turtle-shaped brick pizza oven! It looked pretty cool!

John, I am getting ready to build my wood burning oven this summer. Can you e-mail me the picture of the turtle oven? ChicagoDining@aol.com. I am a sculptor, so I am thinking about a way to do something special with my oven.

John & wife...wow been around. I went to Malaysia & Singapore in '95...loved it. Good people, clean, drug traffic controlled, no freaked out freaky "up for 5 days speed freak taxi drivers" driving too fast (like Thailand).
The Bali land..was the sale profitable? The pic of the Bali Pizza oven was bitchen! Thanks for sharing.

Small world, huh? ] We love SE Asia and I especially like Malaysia, I feel lie home there. We have a condo in Taiwan and Malaysia, and we plan to split our time there after I retire.
