Is there anything GOOD about Puna?

A little off subject but well worth it if you aren't already familiar with my favorite state song:
"Your State's Name Here" by Lou & Peter Berryman

http://www.guntheranderson.com/v/data/yourstat.htm

Here's a few verses, but check out the whole song:

Sometimes when the grass is blown by the breeze
There's a far away look in the leaves of the trees
A memory returns, heartbreakingly clear
Of a place I call home, [Your state's name here]
....[refrain]
My grampa would come and turn on the game
And fall asleep drinking [Your local beer's name]
While gramma would sing in the garden for hours
To all of [The names of indigenous flowers]

Moon in all your splendor, known only to my heart...call back my Rose! Rose of San Antone......Lips so sweet and tender like petals falling apart...speak to me of my love my own........

Didn't notice if anyone mentioned that in little, laid back Pahoa, we have several outstanding restaurants. Kaleo's is, imho, one of the best, if not the best restaurant on the Big Island. We have very good Mexican, Thai and an outstanding Italian dig called Paulo's. Also, the local L&L has been described to me by discerning locals as the best L&L in the state. So, we got the eats!

Kaleo's and some others also have great live music.

The Makuu farmers market is a standout and the others out here are "no ka oi". Smaller, but still no ka oi.

Lee, there is no such a thing as the "Best L&L" since it's a franchise and all dishes are the same at all locations. Just like BK, McD, KFC, etc.

Somewhat right and wrong Johnny Boy. Yes they are franchised and carry a generalized menu but all L&Ls also have their own localized menus and specials. (My friend owns one on the mainland. They too have their own variety)
And their seasoning, cooking style, and MSG intake varies. [:p]

So I would say some locales are better than others. Personally I like Pahoa L&L over Keaau and Hilo ones.

got to agree with SD about the L&Ls. we prefer pahoa's over kea'au's. however, the original one on o'ahu to me, tops the list.

Well, I guess I will have to check with the "Boss" about this! I happen to know Eddie Flores who started the L&L business.

I'll never understand what people like about Luquins. I'll give them credit for being such a long term business. I have been coming there since 1997 and they have always been around but the food is horrible.

We quit going to Luquin's years ago. I don't think it's terrible, just mediocre and not as good as what we can cook at home. Despite being a native Texan with a fondness for TexMex, I have travelled extensively in Mexico and love Sonoran and Oaxacan regional cooking, as well as Puebla style. I get supplies on my visits to Texas and bring them back, being mindful of the Ag restrictions. The old Mercado in downtown San Antonio has good ingredients from all over Mexico, as well as local South Texas items. If I can't make it to San Antonio, there are any number of Mexican groceries and markets in Fort Worth, Austin, and Dallas from which to choose.
