Maybe of interest, in 1950 the movie "Bird of Paradise" (the remake, not the original) starring Debra Paget & Louis Jourdan was filmed in the Kapoho area near the warm springs ("Waiwelawela", iirc) which also had a lava tube in part of the movie. It was still "hot" in that tube...

Also, as you travel from Opihikao towards Kehena, there is a dip in the road where another lava tube is located. As a child, we'd let the boys light a match so we could see...you could swim from one end to the other, but long time you had to hold your breath...!

Lucy, and all, do we have a section to discuss the akualele, and other cultural stories/beliefs? It may be of interest to some moving here, and I'd love to hear others opinions and experiences. The akualele, Lucy, is a sight to behold...

Fair warning if you would like some photos drop me an email! I ventured into the cave with friends one rainy foggy day and after entering the cave and hearing the ventilated door lock, we I started to get creeped out. The cave is very interesting and a living breathing entity truly! After descending maybe 1/4 mile or less, we come upon the first of the ladders descending into the cave further. No bad until I heard that after you go down one ladder, you need to step to the left, or was that the right to catch the second ladder and go on to the 3RD LADDER.

Me well I couldn't make the leap of faith, or imagination either! I'm happy to say my friends had a grand time and I did some reading and oh no no cell reception, some reading. I did enjoy watching the droplets of moisture floating in the light from the head lamp going hither and yon as the cave would breathe, that was very interesting. Oh it was comfortable too temperature wise! I was just about worried they were eaten alive when here they ventured back into view 1 hour and 15 minutes or so later! All's well that ends well! I have never had clostrophobia before THE Cave experience! LOL

was surprised when I read the link posted by bystander, the Allreds live in Alaska same community I live in! I had heard they had a piece of property on the Big Island. They also assisted with a number of caves on Prince of Wales island. http://orgs.usd.edu/esci/alaska/caves.html

ah wonderful post. my father has passed some 20 years now, but loved these caves. i have a picture of him by pele's vagina. he told us she used this flying part to visit the volcanoes where her sister lived. what bittersweet memories this brought to me of my father. thank you for the links....

Sorry to bring this thread back to life but I think it is important and an ongoing thing.

Found the mother of all lava tubes. Pretty awesome and ancient and kind of creepy since kapuna have been there who knows when. Saw some very old camp fire sites in the tubes with ophili shells left in the ashes. Chicken skin.

So it goes roughly alongside F road in Hawaiian Acres and just south of Aulii in Orchidland? but it must branch off in places as there are cave entrances all over both subs.

There are a lot of tubes in HA/OLE, Kazumura is just one of them. The whole area that all the subdivisions are built on, from Mauna Loa Estates and Fern Forest down to HPP, is one big flow field that erupted from the area of Thurston lava tube.
