Pu'u O'o rises
#31
The whole lava lake has pushed up so high inside the crater now. Like it is sitting on a large "bubble". I'm thinking there is going to be one terrific show to be seen when the side of the perched lake splits open and allows all that lava to spill out of Pu'u O'o! Just wondering too if that "bubble" is acting like a plug and if it "pops" will we get a violent eruption? Makes me think of Mt. Saint Helens.

Different kind of volcano from Mt. St Helen.
Red, not grey.
Hawaii volcanoes are basaltic, so no pyroplastic eruptions like the Cascade volcanoes.

Yes, I'm familiar with the differences. But they have had explosive eruptions in the past. Not many but they are possible. This is according to the ranger at the park.

years ago we used to park on the belt by the mountain view postoffice and watch the show of "lava bombs" exploding hundreds of feet into the air. the road would be full of parked cars watching the show. i realize this is different from st. helens blowing off half the mountain top but sometimes the eruptions can certainly be classified as explosive! my dad said these rocks that looked small from mt. view were the size of vw beetles. i dont know if you could see it now, with all the swamp magos that have grown up along the road but i bet you could from kopua road if pele decides to put on another show..

Pele does throw rocks and occasionally incinerates people. I remember reading that lava rocks on the shoreline on the way to Shipman Beach were thrown there by the volcano.

Wish all that was going over the pali. Could get the tourists to make the trip!

BTW.... Where is all that lava going now? Just sitting there or draining off somewhere???

This volcano in Africa has a very similar-looking lava lake.

According to today's report the two little craters on the side of the west rim are full of lava and within a meter or two of the lip. The new images they just posted show this very well. The lava is leaking out from the edges of the base of the perched lake now instead of overflowing the lake edges, but there is still enough of it that the perched lake keeps rising. At this rate lava should breach the crater and start flowing to the pali again in a day or two, unless dakine's prediction holds and it does the rapid drain and squirts out somewhere else.

Flow coming out that west side will probably come down over the 1999-2007 flows inside the park boundaries, not on the Puna side.
