Don't forget DISH gives $50 to each party for referrals...

I can't find a phone number for dish. I have just joined the HACA for real and can at least go to the center if I need. It's well worth the thirty dollars just to be able to use the center as our own private Internet cafe. And if course I can now vote on all of these earth shaking issues.

It occurred to me last night that if we all use the community center for our Internet access, we might get to meet and talk in real life. That would be novel wouldn't it?

That's why it's called a "community center" -- remember, it was built before the Internet.

I have visions of people talking to each other on line whilst actually sitting next to each other Smile

Happy Father's Day everybody.

I am thinking more and more of self sufficiency these days as I suppose we all are. Despite being on this island for some twenty years I am a 'city chick' with little knowledge of even basic gardening and farming. Although my place looks great it is because those plants have survived in spite of me Wink
So forgive my ignorance:
I have been told;
Sheep / goats: sheep rip up the grass by the root and subsequently destroy their own pasture. Goats 'cut' the grass and effectively act as lawn mowers. Sheep eat grass and convert it to meat. They are supremely stupid. Goats eat anything and produce milk and cheese and can be trained.

There must be loads of different types of sheep and goats though. Something that eats the tangle fern would be good.

Ducks / chickens: Ducks are easier, their eggs are better, they are more territorial so they stay put. Chickens require coops that are smelly and require regular cleaning, and roosters that are a pain in the butt noisy.

Again there must be many kinds of both though. I would appreciate any info on what's available and workable here in the acres.
Much mahalo

well birchi, having had sheep and goats both. sheep are much easier. put up a 4 foot fence and you are done. goats, put up a 7 foot fence, make sure nothing is close that they can ladder up, put stuff all along the ground so they dont go under, they will eat everything in reach, they are browsers not grazers. that said i do love my goats and hair sheep will eat more like goats and clean up the weeds. if possible have 2 different yards so you never let either eat down to the ground.
also have both ducks and chickens, each have their fine points. both stay close to home for me, however if you are not fenced and a wild rooster comes in, he might take your girls off. ducks are the better layers and lay longer. but you have to go on a treasure hunt for their eggs. i do have friends whose ducks will lay in boxes, mine never will, constantly change their spot. both are great pets have real personalities and do well in the acres...
