Coqui
#41
aloha Scott. They don't seem to like the salt air right at sea level, near the shore, and of course they can't take frost, but they have been reported in Volcano Village and Mauna Loa Estates at 3800' and at the golf course at 4000' They do stay quieter during cool weather.

Can anyone tell me if they have moved down to the lower end of Hawaiian Beaches??? Our home is on Puni Makai Loop North. (.7 miles north of the shore)
We're on our way with or with out them this April. Thanks for the help.

Well well well, seems that Tanglefoot, as a company was previously sought out by Lowes to do research and provide a marketing campaign on the sale of the product for the sole purpose of use for Coqui Frogs in Hawaii. After the research was complete however Lowes decided not to follow through for reasons unknown to the folks at Tanglefoot. John, from Tanglefoot who I spoke with, on the phone, assured me that no physical harm would come to the trees with regard to direct application. Some staining might occur especially on thin smooth bark trees but that was all they have ever encountered. the product has been in use for over one hundred years and in the 20 years that John has been with them he has not experienced any complaint other than the staining and no law suits have ever been filed. We did both agree that a barrier and his research showed that a 6 inch barrier would be effective for the frogs and also, with the barrier repeat applications would be easier.

John will be forwarding me his research for the state of Hawaii for its use against the coqui frog, I expect this tomorrow and I will publish his findings here or provide those of you who are interested in The Company's findings.

Again Aloha HADave

In response to Kahunascott, I am staying in that exact area while I look for a house. I currently am listening to only two of the little buggers chirping at each other right outside the screen door. It seems that this area has not got them so bad yet, but when you start hearing them that usually means that it's just a matter of time before their numbers become maddening.
Aloha,
Mark
