Not sure why geothermal released their rotten-egg smell in low lying gas waste into surrounding communities windows again a couple times this week in the early morning hours?. Not sure the leaks were even reported. Anyway geothermal and Helco are in a position to be political hero's for our county and state. Geothermal does have the capabilities to power these cut from helco powered homes in lower puna. I expect nothing less, only wish this could have been done years ago for the Puna residence and lower rates.
Not sure why most never bring up the possibilities of heavy metals released by the drilling or mining from geothermal potentially being a close community health hazard for planned releases?. Seems like all I hear about is so2 gas and how clean/safe it is.
Do we really need more geothermal plants blown wells lifting bull dozers with their blow outs? More planned releases into neighborhoods when the wind bows 40mph?. As long as Pele is active within the east rift zone and minerals or steam are present, man will go after it expensively with no regards to human health only wealth.
gypsy - I live fairly close to you.
It is not the geothermal plant you claim to keep smelling, it is the volcano! There are probably hundreds of places in Puna that occasionally vent gas off from below the surface. They are called steam vents - and one bed and breakfast is even named "Steam Vent Inn".
If you are really so worried about gas - why have you posted that you have made several hiking trips to the new flow?
Leilanidude, I can always put the wind to my back and hike out to the flows. The gasses and smells are a bit different as well, that come from the geothermal compared to the lava or steam vents. This morning around 4:45 a.m there was another release or leak at the geothermal. This 100 yard section of the road at the y intersection, next to lava tree park was completely gassed in. This is now 3 out of 4 mornings with the same released crap that comes right out of geothermal.
Very disturbing to have a leaking plant that seems to draw rain or make its own clouds that rain. We think geothermal somehow can create enough moisture to rain and keep its gasses, waste, and electricity loss down. Does that sound really crazy to most of you?. Or possible to others?. Anyway friends and family have gotten sick, or died young living close to this plant that plans on releasing gas and waste around its plant. With no good health study to speak of we can't say its not the geothermal that could be causing us our loss or concerns.
Met many folks who were pro geothermal for years are now starting to change their minds also. Really this is a very dirty plant that has been able to experiment for to long now, to close to neighborhoods and very much affecting people's way of life.
Leilanidude we may live close yet what we choose to see what is happening around us or to our land a bit different(no problem)?. I choose to get up around 4 a.m most mornings and take my youngest for drives to allow others a chance to sleep in. This is why I have seen these releases lately and just thought I would pass the info on to those who it may concern.

You are seeing a very natural phenomenon. It is not being caused by releases at the geothermal plant!

Sounds like you need to move away from lava zone 1.What you are explaining is a natural phenomenon in lava zone 1.
Until about 10 years ago I had a steam vent in my yard in Kapoho. There is also a vent on the south side of the Kapoho Cone(Green Lake). You can see it on cool mornings .
The signs of escaping steam is what led them to build PGV where it is.

Yes, as I said, as soon as a technology is adopted, and relied-upon, up pop the objections.
Imagine, strange smells on a seething pile of volcanic activity - or noise at an airport - borderline shocking, IMHO!!!!!
Energy, abundant and relatively inexpensive, is the Universal Tool that can tackle any job - the great uplifter of mankind that helps him rise above the beasts and the bog and the bugs. Energy = freedom, Energy = Prosperity and Energy = Health. Try running an MRI on potato chips, or buffalo chips. Try plowing 1,000 acres of bread-in-the-raw with a strong back and bulging thighs!
Yes, Energy does it - yet some feel as if a few smells venturing from a volcano justify attacking it - Brilliant!!!!!

Gypsy has been crying about the health of his wife and kids for as long as I can remember. At what point does one stop playing the victim card and move away?

Never, because it suits an anti-energy, anti-civilization agenda. An army marches on its stomach, and a civilization grows on its energy supply.

With all due respect to your opinions, I have lived off the grid on three continents for more than 30 years. My own opinion.
Energy- Tied to the grid- Not a slave of your own home system.
Energy- Modern home system- Pain in the butt!
And freedom from what? Where do you get all those solar panels, batteries, battery chargers, charge controllers, inverters, back up generators, copper wires, fuses, circuit boxes, etc. They don't grow on trees, and you can't make them at home. If it's one's passion to be constantly monitoring and messing with one's home system and replacing costly parts when necessary, then great.
But many people have neither the interest nor aptitude for it; and personally, it's grown old for me.
