#41
Rest in Peace Steve Makuakane-Jarrell. A popular big island National Park Ranger who showed great restraint when confronting a homeless man about his dogs at Kaloko-Honokahau National Park.

Apologist? Funny. Try not lumping people together in groups. We are individuals Smile.
Read the eyewitness reports. Travis was acting out of control and to some seemed somewhat irrational. At one point he asked the crowd if his drone was bothering anyone and the crowd said yes. There is near universal praise and thanks for the ranger. The one notable exception, who has been quoted out of context, said he saw nothing until he turned his head and saw the tasing. Have you seen the crowds in the park the last few days? It's daunting. So here's this guy flying a drone (toy or not it's a drone) who is acting aggressive towards the ranger, says he has no ID, and runs away with the drone. Would you have been 100% sure that the drone didn't have some kind of weapon? From law enforcement's point of view, he had to be stopped and a taser is a legally accepted tool. Far better than a gun. Chasing him down doesn't sound like a great idea either. I'd rather be tased than fall down on lava rock any day. Read Travis's own words all over the Internet. He hates the government and seems to believe only in the law of God.
Seems to me that the apologists are the ones forgiving truly bad behavior.

No I wasn't there, and no I don't condone Travis's actions.

I just think there is too much violence in our society already and that this level of violence was not absolutely necessary.

And Pog when has running and fleeing from someone ever been the impetus for starting a mob, that's what "something tells me" - past history? Try attacking people based off what they're saying not their name you might actually get somewhere, don't worry you're still my favorite troll.

People trying to confuse this issue with another completely related incident are the lowest of the low. Ranger Maukakane-Jarrel's death is entirely unrelated and you besmirch his memory by bringing it up in this fashion. If you wish to commemorate him do so in another thread.

I'm sorry you feel that Steve's memory is besmirched RJ. I honor his sacrifice.

His tragic death is very relevent however, and may even be an influence on today's "use of force" policies. Steve was a kind and trusting person, and his gentleness in dealing with a mentally unbalanced person probably led to his death. The Ranger in this latest incident used the tools and training he had to protect himself and the park visitors. He had no more reason than Steve had to think the crazy person was harmless.

To blame anyone other than instigator is what besmirches the memory of fallen LEO's.

Travis is a moron. The Park Ranger in question should be in Afghanistan not a park.

What's not so clear is if the use of a taser is justifiable in this situation.

Simple... The park has rules!! Obey them or else... then the clown goes and doesnt show ID and then runs away into the dark, leaving his family... that all adds up for this clown asking for a good Zap IMO lol good for the park rangers. the HVNP Cops may have done more...

PS . the people there that night were well quoted ... on facebook and in comments in the news stories... as hearing this clown (once the Park Rangers DID announce themselves to him) ask everyone "do you all mind?" and the crowd all yelled "YES" .... they dont want some kook flying his buzzing crap over their heads while they are trying to take in the raw beauty of that overhyped 'Halema'uma'u Overlook Crater Lake'

Creating the scene that he did when his family was there does raise a lot of questions. On the face of it tazing somebody in the back does seem excessive, but then again I would not have guessed anybody would have let their own kids in for what he did so considerable allowance must now be made for what other crazy things the ranger might have thought possible, given that he was there and we were not.
