Kaleo's Restaurant in Pahoa
#41
Stopped in the other day...

Recommendation to the owner if he reads this board.

Paper Menus so that people can bring the menu home and make call in orders.

Y'all lost a sale on Saturday because of that [Wink]

Well, I might be more of a critique than others, or I was just expecting more, but this place can not even be mentioned on the same page with Paolo's. Our dinner was OK but not the kind of dinner I would want to go back for.

Last month we had friends in town and had a long day of sight seeing, snorkeling and lava viewing and were tired, hungry, and a little grungy. We were greeted with very friendly people and were given fantastic service. The food was even better. I had a pesto pasta dish, my hubby had the filet, friends had alfredo pasta and a hamburger. We were very impressed and found that their food does compare to Hilo Bay Cafe's. I like their prices a bit better too.

Thanks for the recommendation Scott & Jane,

Lynn & Bob

Three’s a charm. The family went to Kaleos for Moms 84th birthday and the dining experience was excellent.
Service, ambiance, food and the desserts were above expectations. After dinner we met with the owner (Leslie) and we were introduced to the chef. We were able to confer to her how good our dinners were. One thing we did notice and mentioned to them was the portions were larger then on our previous visits. They confirmed that one of the changes they made was to increase the portion size.
I gotta’ tell ya’ that we ALL were stuffed when we left, Jayne even brought a doggie bag home with us. (Ruff, ruff) I asked for a candle in mom’s dessert and they were delighted to provide it for us. Furthermore, they comped mom’s desert for her birthday.
One drawback was that it was a bit warm in the dining room. Our reservations were at 5:30 (we like to eat early) and because of the setting sun through the windows evidently it raised the temperature a bit. When we discussed this issue with Leslie she informed us that they are working on it. They are going to add window shades and a few more ceiling fans. I’m sure the rise in temperature is only for a short period any evening there’s sun, once the sun goes down things return to normal. And of course if it’s normal Puna weather there aren’t many sunsets.
I just want to thank Leslie and her staff for a wonderful eatery right in town.
Also, they are open for lunch and have added burgers to their menu.
Leslie also mentioned that they run monthly specials, I told her to post them here so we can take advantage of them.

Stopped in for dinner at Kaleo's tonight. I was impressed. Rupert Tripp was playing, his wife danced hula, and the food was terrific. We took advantage of the May special...buy one entree and the second entree is 50 percent off, Mondays to Thursdays from 5-5:30. We had the rack of lamb and coconut crusted ono, white chocolate mousse with fresh raspberries for dessert. Yummy. We'll be back for sure.

My husband and I go there quite often especially when we have guests visiting. It is a great place and I think it was just what Pahoa needed. To be honest I was getting a little sick of Luquins and Ning's. Don't get me wrong! They have great food, but we needed a place like Kaleo's to freshen up Pahoa. You have to try their banana lumpia with vanilla ice cream for desert. It's delicious![:p]

Just got back from lunch at Kaleo's - it's the same menu as in the evening (and as good!). Want to tip everyone off that Kaleo's is on at least one of Robert's Tours' schedules.

However, the tours have to pre-order their lunches. While we were there today, a half-bus - with 18 people - arrived about five minutes after we did. While one waitress was taking our order, two others brought out their meals and drinks. After their meal, some ordered dessert, and still the whole group was gone in 35 minutes, without any disruption to we few other diners.

I spoke to the staff before we left, to commend them on their efficiency. I was told that the buses come "just about every day" and "sometimes there are two". While the arrival times are "erratic", they are rarely there before 12 noon, and Kaleo's opens at 11.00 am; so, if some of you might be disturbed by these groups, just plan on eating a little early.

But please don't forgo the pleasure of a lunch at Kaleo's because of the tours - you won't be discommoded.

We ate at Kaleo's two months ago and it was just the way I like it to be when going out for a nice dinner for two. The food was excellent. The service was perfect (how often can you say that?). The wine was really nice. The place was casual and clean. It was that evening out to dinner when you just relax and forget the outside world and it's more than just eating food at a restaurant.

What about the prices? Man, I have to admit that there have been too many times in my life that I've paid too much for food that wasn't very good. Kaleo's is an excellent value because the prices are quite reasonable and the food is really, really good.

We had a couple of appetizers, fish entrees, wine, dessert, the whole thing. Everything was prepared and presented perfectly. We don't eat out that often but I want to go back as often as possible. I think Pahoa has the best food this side of the island. I hope all Pahoa's unique restaurants stick around. Let's support them all as much as possible.
