Aggrieved???
hmmm
so these Americans who in reality are hapa descendants of the 2nd people to find and settle these islands... are now pissed...
were they pissed enough back in 1966 to kill the road to the summit? NO, what about the 1st telescope? 2nd? 3rd? 4th? .....9th, 12th???? etc. and how many of these so called local 2 facers go up there to shovel snow in their gashogs and bring back for beach keiki? how many???
maybe they can get a GOOD job now on mt??? maybe for buy eco-friendly electric hyb truck so no contaminate the huge pile of cinder thats slowly sinking into the Pacific via erosion and plate tectonics moving it into colder NW waters...
and...
"""After listening to the community and hearing their concerns for the future of the island’s youth, and their support for education that could lead to high tech jobs, TMT committed to fund $1million a year for STEM education on the island. TMT, with local advice, asked a group of on-island leaders to determine how best to use $1 million a year STEM funding. After meeting for two years, the group fleshed out what is now the THINK Fund. TMT’s $1 million annual contribution is distributed through the THINK Fund at Hawaii Community Foundation ($750,000) for grants, scholarships and endowment and the THINK Fund at Pauahi Foundation ($250,000) for scholarships. The THINK Fund – short for The Hawaii Island New Knowledge launched in 2014 and is already making a difference in the critical areas of science, technology, engineering and math. As of fall 2018, TMT has distributed over $4.5 million $3.375 million to THINK at the Hawaii Community Foundation and $1.125 million to the Pauahi Foundation.
TMT has also initiated the Workforce Pipeline Program to prepare Hawaii Island students for science and technology jobs. TMT is working with the State Department of Education, University of Hawaii Hilo, Hawaii Community College, Hawaii County government, and nonprofit organizations to strengthen STEM skills infrastructure at UH Hilo, HCC and K-12 education organizations serving low income and first-generation college attending populations. Currently, the project funds, supports and participates in programs that are committed to helping Hawaii Island students achieve success at becoming self-directed, lifelong learners who think critically and creatively and function as caring, responsible, productive members of society. TMT is committed to spend additional funds each year on its Workforce Pipeline Program when fully operational."""

the thing that PISSES ME OFF, and makes me call most of them 'posers with hands held out for compensation' is ...
when Ive asked the protestors about native plants ie what are they stepping on up there, most dont have a clue what is endemic up there on the saddle and what is not, and what is the worst one.. a big fail when you try for feel they are doing their best to save the natural aina.. the aina thats been evolving for 80,000,000 yrs now, not some modern 1,000 yr old culture that killed off those before them...
iow they are ALL Polynesians.. the ones in Hawaii are Americans, the others are often '3-world' living and struggling now...
aggrieved???

bananahead - were they pissed enough back in 1966 to kill the road to the summit? NO, what about the 1st telescope? 2nd? 3rd? 4th? ...
Well, there were concerns raised and calls for more oversight and accountability all the way back to the first and second telescope in the early 70s. It's not like any of this is actually new if you've been paying attention. These complaints shows up in local papers at that time and recent books on the subject such as:
Stairway to the Stars: The Story of the World’s Largest Observatory
In regards to the early construction of the Canada-France-Hawaii (second) telescope in 1974: "Environmentalists, hunters, and a number of others began objecting to the development of the mountain. A 'master plan' was called for." (pg 45)

Yes, but let's not forget that old adage.. when a protester protests, if nobody was there to witness them protesting, did they really protest?

You obviously don't know. Had you been to any of the planning meetings you would have seen that the communtity was overwhelmingly against the new attempt to circumvent UH's bad faith violations of all previous agreements they made. Still, the papers dutifully reported the UH position, "We're not hearing any opposition."

alohanaia, read it again please.
I was commenting on ironyak's.. "in 1974: "Environmentalists, hunters, and a number of others began objecting to the development of the mountain..." which was posted in response to bananahead's rant in which he said.. "were they pissed enough back in 1966 to kill the road to the summit? NO, what about the 1st telescope? 2nd? 3rd? 4th?"
All I was doing is pointing out that many here have no idea about the history of the things they comment on. As in if bananahead never heard of it did it really happen? According to bananahead no.

Cheers and my apology Glinda, I understand now what you meant. Tho I have enjoyed some of bh's insights, I was avoiding comment on his startling racism above. Few here are familiar with the decades of contentious mismanagement of the summit by UH, but many are comfortable spewing hatred and ignorance about those who ARE familiar with the multiple agreements UH has brokered with the community and then reneged on. The "new comprehensive management plan" is an end run around the original mauna kea management plan agreement, which UH breached, and the resultant "comprehensive management plan" which UH has breached and does not want to abide. The community has heard it all before. UH didn't just build out to the limit of telescopes they agreed to, the later telescopes are arrays, so although Keck almost is almost always doing 2 simultaneous observations with 2 telescopes, it counts as one array. And I have only seen SMA operate as an array (it's an interferometer), but every document I can find says SMA has 8 telescopes. UH counts one.
TMT is to be the largest optical telescope in the world. The building is larger than the Houston Astrodome. It's the most massively inappropriate construction you could propose in the conservation district. Mauna Kea was rejected as the site for TMT 15 years ago, it was planned for atacama which is still the backup plan and the most likely site. But the late senator Inouye, pro tempore of the senate and #1 for pork projects, heard that a billion dollar construction project had rejected Hawaii and promised management he could ram the project through despite any opposition, environmental concerns, and prior bad faith agreements. Business as usual.
I observed all the planning to placate and ignore any resistance to the new plans (outreach, propaganda, greenwashing). It's sadly funny to see the fruit of of this deception proferred by useful idiots, even here in this thread.
And while grafty politicians love bloaty go nowhere construction projects, the sad reality is there is little commitment to fund the subsequent operation of science projects. Science budgets are trimmed every year by every world goverment paying (reluctantly) for telescope operations. My telescope forced employees (up all night) to buy their own coffee so as not to be accused of squandering the ever shinking operating budget on non-essential expenses. TMT has made the situation worse for all telescopes, since they now all have to contract security.
Anyway that's enough for now. Sorry I jumped your snot Glinda, that one missed. I will strive to be more thoughtful.
Aloha

Just for clarification, the Keck is counted as two telescopes because each telescopes works independently. The SMA dishes work together as one telescope, hence the reason it's counted as one telescope. And there is only one array on the mountain; the SMA.

The TMT was always planned for viewing the sky from the northern hemisphere. The backup plan for the TMT is the Canary Islands in Spain, as that location, like Mauna Kea, is in the northern hemisphere. The VLT is already built and operating as a large optical telescope in the Atacama desert.
Which telescope do you work at alohanaia?
