Hawaii was hit by a 1-meter (39-inch) wave, according to scientists at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, which wasn’t anticipating major damage. Can't really imagine doing any damage in Hilo. Hilo's surf wall probably deflected it.

For our mainland members:

Local radio is telling us that Alii Drive in Kona took water. King Kam Hotel got a wash through it's lower floor, canoes destroyed in the harbor. I understand that the waterfront restaurants took some kind of beating.

No reports of injuries which is wonderful.
Assume the best and ask questions.

Tried jogging to the ocean this morning like I always do in HPP. Got stopped at Second street. HPD still is blocking all roads to the coast as of 8am. And lots of cars of people who live there waiting to return.

Heard the King Kamehameha Hotel in Kona got flooded as well as Bubba Gumps

Glad to report that absolutely no damage down here. Once again lucky it was not a high tide. My sympathies for those in Japan that lost family and friends.

Kitty glad was glad to be home.

And got to see an old friend of my dad's doing the roadblock! He is on PD reserves and only does this kind of stuff now!

I was a block or two away from Ken's this morning, and all looked OK. At that point they were announcing opening of all the evacuated areas except for North and South Kona, and Hilo airport had opened about 1/2 hour earlier. Lots of places closed in town, though...
