New Payday loans to open in Pahoa
#41
I agree that it is not an asset for Pahoa Village.

Interesting topic. I agree that this type of business will have a huge impact on the character and charm of Pahoa town. Although (apparently) completely legal, perhaps a compromise would be for the company to locate it's office in the Malama market shopping area. There are office spaces for lease and this part of town has already been disfigured by Burger king, Long'a Drugs and KFC. When I first visited Pahoa in the late 80s, I fell in love with it's rustic charms. If my first view of Puna, and Pahoa in particular, had been just a few days ago, I may well have opted to move to Hilo town.

How about a pawn shop? Wouldn't that be classified as an undesirable business? Shelling out 20 bucks for a $200 watch is about as classy as lending $200 at some outrageous interest rate. No one is forced to deal with these places but I'm just asking if a pawn shop is as seedy in reputation as a loan shop.

Yes, probably, but much more fun to shop in.

I guess all that's left is to open up a "Buy here, pay here" used car lot.

When I was on Maui, I saw a couple of payday loan places. I wonder if there are any in Kona? Waikaloa?

I agree with Kalena.
And no, you don't have them in areas like Waikaloa etc.
These places are the dregs of the earth. 100% exploitative.
Just see them outside the gates of military bases preying on
military personnel.[V][V]

No, there is one more business to open to make the community "complete". A massage parlor!

There is a legitimate, well respected MASSAGE PARLOR already in Pahoa.

What strikes me about this thread is all the gnashing of teeth and rending of garments over quaint little Pahoa going to the dogs, and well, Martha, there oughta be a law.... And yet, from what I've been told, Pahoa in the 1980s or earlier was not much better than a pirate village. When did the Pahoa Steering Committee of Respectability elect themselves anyway? Did I miss that? And who gets to decide what's respectable, anyway? KeaauRich has every right to be nervous, I think. Slippery slopes abound when the law is deemed not protective (prohibitive? stifling?) enough... Some of us moved out here to get away from intrusive social engineering.

The fact is no one can do anything about it.
Because there is no local control, in a county the size of Delaware and Rhode Island combined there are no cities, towns or villages. Pahoa is just the name on a post office
