No idea if those cats were ever allowed to be free, although you do say never.

Cats that were born free do not take to confinement. I have two (spayed) Hawaii born cats who like to be both inside and outside. It's a beautiful thing to see their joy in exploring the landscape or just enjoying the deck (which they couldn't if they were indoor cats).

If they are inside of their own volition, all is well. If they are locked in, they completely freak out. They literally bounce off walls chasing each other. They divebomb me if I am sleeping. They meow constantly. Any door that is opened has to be guarded or they'll run out.

It was after I moved them the first time to a new house, that they experienced being shut in while they acclimated. That made some kind of deep impression on them, because any time all the doors are shut and the cat door is shut, their nerves go on full trauma alert.

Outdoor life is dangerous, but they won't be shut in. I tried it for a month on my last move. It was horrible for all involved.

Luckily for me, I have enough property that they stay on my property and don't get shot by crotchety old guys who can't understand cat nature or don't wish to.

Unless the feral's that I see are ingesting mice and rats complete with bones I am not seeing them eating rodents.
Mine certainly do eat rats, and they are picky eaters, so I don't know why ferals would not. I know how much of the rat they eat, as one of them likes to eat them in her safe place, the bedroom. She eats it all but the head, the liver, and the tail, and she cleans the liver good.

She stalks birds all the time, because they are a challenge, but she rarely catches one before it flies away. Honestly, I have hundreds or thousands of mynah birds feeding on the lawn here, so it doesn't bother me if she gets one. They are pests in their own way.

The chickens she leaves well alone. She knows better. I've never found a chicken partly eaten, ever, not even by a feral.

I don't have any great love for feral cats. They are mostly quite mean. I feel pity for them, eking out an existence that barely works, as they seem to crave domestic cat food and the ones around me stalk cat dishes more than birds. They cause me all sorts of grief, but yet I would never kill one. Kill with blood lust or kill humanely in your eyes, it's still killing a highly intelligent animal.

Ferals don't live that long, so it's hard for me to understand why a neutered feral cat is such a problem. Agree that cat reproduction unchecked is the problem. Neutering male ferals should cut down on that, along with education and low cost spay clinics or coupons.

oink, You are familiar with the term "final solution," right?

As I indicated before, how people treat animals tells you a lot about them.

KathyH, I love cats and thank you for coming to their defense! Mine welcomed two feral and wounded hens into our yard and we are now one big happy mini-farm family.
Soon, I am moving and will remove my two cats from this state. Two less to worry about, all you cat haters! I still love ya. Just don't go killin' my sweet pets who make me laugh every day.

"...There needs to be a policy of removing cats from the environment permanently. Fluffy getting caught up in that process is an unfortunate cost of doing business..."

Un-f#$%*ing believable.

All my cats are rescues that I found as abandoned kittens. Meaning some lovely person dumped newborn kittens on the seal cliffs at the end of a dirt road. I wasn't looking to own cats at the time but I certainly wasn't going to let poor defenseless animals die either.

At first I was going to have them be indoor only cats but two of them would go nutty trying to get outside and would claw their way through window careening to get outside. (I rescreened my sliding lanai door 3x - even pet proof screening didn't work.) They don;t roam too far (just a couple doors in either direction. but for the most part hang around the yard.

My next door neighbor often lets his medium size dog loose and this dog frequently comes in my yard and takes a dump and chases my cats. Neighbors don't care. I have piles of dog **** all over my yard from this dog. Now, following the logic of some people on this thread, I should be able to 1) shoot my neighbor's dog because it tries to harm my livestock (my cat) or 2) let loose my very large pure bred dog (the breed of which is often used by police units) to deal accordingly with said neighbor dog.

If reincarnation exists, then I hope certain posters on this thread come back in their next life as mice. [:0]

Well so I'm a Nazi because I recognize that a feral cat turned into the HS will be euthanized, Lovely. Apparently the PC police are alive and well. The unfortunate fact that a term in the english language was used by the nazi means it can never be used again by anyone. Those of you who think TNR which passes the problem back to others to deal with makes it a resounding success have little connection to the real world. Since you and I both know you will never be successful at controlling the morons who dump and mistreat cats after they do what cats do, Breed, why do you think its fine to criticize those who have to eliminate the problem cats permanently after you bring them back and DUMP them back into the environment. I'm talking about a real, quantifiable expense incurred to deal with this problem, not some anecdotal harm. I am and will continue to dispose of these cats as long as they continue to create a problem. As far as the real cost involved. A worker at one of our suppliers was involved in removing ferals also, He was scratched by a feral, treated the scratch but still contracted Cat Scratch infection was off work for 89+ days, incurred thousands of dollars in medical expense and almost lost his hand over the whole ordeal. So tell me again how not eliminating ferals permanently works.
