The real issue is the DOE, vote NO until there is accountability.
Let's not pretend that the problems are limited to a single department...

How about an audit of DOE? Decades overdue...

I just watched an ad with four of our previous governors who got rich at the public troth agreeing that they shouldn't have to give anything back. Only little people should pay taxes.
The main argument the NO crowd uses is that it will increase the cost of living. In reality it most likely will have no effect, but it could just as easily lower the cost of living. If there is less speculation on real estate then prices would come down.
The undercurrent in all this is that the legislature cannot be trusted to behave responsibly with this authority. Perhaps this is a valid concern, however if Hawaii abandoned the practice of "Divine Right" incumbency and actually thought about who they are electing that problem would be solved.
Miss-management at DOE is not the issue here, adequate funding is.

Please STOP PRETENDING that these are separate issues. As noted above, look no further than the charter schools, which are somehow "magically" able to achieve BETTER results with LESS money.

Cost of living is going up no matter what; it's just a matter of how quickly. Topical examples: "regulation" of vacation rentals will have economic impact. Mandatory raises will result in tax increases. Redirection of existing "purpose" taxes (FTR, GET surcharge) will "probably" result in tax increases elsewhere.

You don't realize what you are stating. Do you know how many homes over $1 mil there are, that are owned by out of state folks? Do you think these folks will all just suddenly agree to paying even more than they already do, just because YOU THINK they can "afford it"?
Oh wow you have convinced me I will vote no on it- NOT!!
I do realize what I'm saying and I will most certainly vote yes on this! No dude from Leilani is going to change my mind on this.
The teachers need it. The kids need it.

It was a struggle to see how this bill could be controlled once in place. The counties
Have somewhat control of the prop tax now ,i wouldnt want it to some day accidentally be used to form another rail 4 Oahu, or? Bridge to nowhere?
We voted no.
I helped make sure the kids at kalekehe elementary school got there new playground equipment. It took 3 years and we got the monies ourselves. Fixing the broken schools
Starts at home.

But will they get it? Past experience tells us that an unacceptably high percentage of it will be wasted on administrative costs or diverted. As several of us have repeatedly stated, unless the whole Hawaii DOE and its operating principles are significantly reformed, this proposed tax would only throw good money after bad.

No.
Prediction: first year's "new" tax revenue will be added to the DOE budget amidst fanfare about how wonderful it is to have all this funding. Following years (once everyone stops paying attention) will decrease existing funding because it's "replaced" by all this "new" funding. Within 3-5 years, DOE will be worse off than it is now.

Considering the rail has doubled in price since the project began, they'll need this tax increase to finish it. Future rail will be paid for with new taxes (which will start out as being "for the children") because all the revenue from "transit-oriented development" will turn out to be imaginary.

Would you vote Yes if the tax applied to you?
