Free range chickens YES or NO

It doesn't particularly bother me if old topics are revived. That is part of the purpose of archiving the topics and posts, to make them available on an ongoing basis.

Carol,

For whatever it is worth, I personally, me, well I was having fun with my comment. The subject just hit my funny bone.

Nonetheless that this was a dredged up subject didn't register with me at all as I suppose that I missed the original and just got the tail end of the rehash as some would call it.

The archive and search feature is most helpful in the building section also.

Aloha.

Now that I'm back in the Huli Huli chicken business, I keep my mouth shut about the chicken control methods that I use. I now leave that up to others to speculate. What I will say is that it's still realy quite around my neighborhood but the Suisan parking lot is sizzling with free range chickens.

Carol I am sorry as the thought never went through my mind as I dredged up the old topic. I was just looking for a way to connect with Tom, ran a search and there he was. I guess I should be more politically correct before I post. Seriously, I never took the topic serious.

funny that I am reading this thread as some illegal (we are in town Keaau NOT ag at all!) free rangers are shuffling through my ti grove.... in my fenced yard. (ETA- big chickens can hop fences & little ones run through chainlink, so unless you have chicken wire along the bottom & a cover on the top... chickens will come!)

When I bought here 4+ years ago there were very few chickens... but some of the houses in our neighborhood have changed hands & empty lots have been developed. There are a lot more chickens ( & the one in our fenced yard has a huddle of chicks to repopulate some more). Either these chickens were brought in by newer neighbors than I, or there was a population living on undeveloped lots, or some of the predators of the chicken have been pushed aside by the newer development....

For all of you that have said to talk to your neighbor... great idea, but for one minor problem. The chickens do not have ID tags that tell you if they belong to anyone, and as I see it, there is no way to tell if it is one of the newer neighbors that brought these birds here, or if it is a misplaced wild population, or if it's a lack of predators....

Why is it no one suggested that the neighbor that took the trap out of the yard should have talked over the situation???? Luckily most of our neighbors now talk to us, but that can take years of work with the neighbors, in our case offering them the fruits of our orchard and a share of the potatoes we glean... if you do not have these resources, it is very hard to open up into some of the older neighborhoods to start any conversations.... This is nothing new for us, as we lived in a house in a very old farming community in the midwest for over 20 years & were still the 'new' neighbors when we retired...

ETA: I do not mind the chickens, as most of the places I have lived have had them... but if they were not a part of the neighborhood when you first were there & you do mind them, I can see how a population of dozens of roving chickens would be an annoyance.... an annoyance that the 'owner' seemed to want to share with his neighbors!

Blend,
I'm not clear as to how "political correctness" comes into play here.

I personally would prefer that people just let well enough alone with old threads, unless someone actually has new information to communicate. I love the archival search function for avoiding asking a question that has already been thoroughly answered, but find it a bit annoying when someone dredges back up an old thread just so they can add their comment to a conversation that is long over and done with. In this case, the connection between Tom's Huli Huli chicken biz and this thread is actually pretty tenuous, and it seems like you just wanted to connect with Tom, not talk about the merits of trapping your neighbors' chickens. But I am only one person, so I asked what other people thought about it.

However, if anyone wants to communicate directly with someone on Punaweb, there is an email function, and while some people have had trouble getting it to work, my emails have always gone through.

I'm not being judgmental or picking sides but it doesn't bother me to see an old topic continued if people have something to say.
