New Payday loans to open in Pahoa
#51
Reading through the thread, my impression is there's consensus that it's legal, and that the proprietors have a right to do business in Pahoa. (Can't speak for everyone, just my impression.)

The lack of consensus seems to be whether or not it's a good thing for the community and whether it's ethical.

IMHO, outlawing such a business is simply attacking a symptom not the (many) causes. Changing the culture will always be more effective than making more laws, although admittedly culture change is much easier said than done. But yes, like Kelena, it makes me sad that they're here. What am I going to do about it? Continue working with and volunteering at our local Charter school to help educate and enrich the next generation. It's not much, but it's better than complaining.

That said, I respect uneedawish for starting the thread. The more people we can get thinking about it, the more likely folks will step up and help the community attack the root causes that bring these kinds of businesses into our communities in the first place. If we all do a little bit, who knows, perhaps we can "turn this battleship around in the water". Someday.

A year ago, wasn't a porn shop run out of Puna? Locating that thing across the street from Keaau Middle School was too much for the good people of the district. Along with Shipman's help, they coaxed them out and I guess the shop is now at the corner across from the Hilo fire station and a park where the kiddies play. Go figure. Somewhat hypocritical as the video shop in the same Keaau location was allowed to rent out adult videos.

From what I have seen. >>> Some of the people who take their kids to that park would have no problem leaving them in the charge of tweekers at the tables there to go rent a porno from across the street. Talk about a perfect location for the next Payday Advance place : )

FYI, A new one IS just a little more Makai BTW.... The sign guys are out everyday looking and waving to every single car.

okay here's a totally off the wall idea...

What if those who had a little money to lend started a lending "bank", those who needed money borrowed but the payback could be in veggies, eggs, etc. The lenders could come in and "withdraw" their investment in the same?

My grandfather had a grain mill, and often the farmers paid for his services in grain, but also eggs, veggies, etc. (barter)

or does this presume that the borrowers are actually trying to get ahead and are just in a tight spot with no one to turn too? and not chronic.

The free market too is a form of social engineering. This mythic, all knowing creature does not always engineer for the good of the commonwealth. It is not about what is respectable. My argument is that it is not desirable. I do not speak on behalf of any committee. I speak on my own behalf and others may share my view. When a view prevails, it might be regarded as the view of a community, online or otherwise.

Hawaii's biggest dollar comes from tourism. Such a business is not attractive from that standpoint. And, from a social engineering standpoint, such a business is most often found in communities that are on a downward trajectory. There is an argument --and studies to support that argument- that the very presence of such a business contributes to that downward trajectory through higher crime rates and even a reduction in property values. We know this intuitively to be true. Think of the kinds of places where these are located. Now think of places where these are not located. Where would you rather live? I would rather live in the community that the free market has not socially engineered into a cycle of poverty and crime.

I think the community should communicate that this business is unwelcome in Pahoa.

Once again I ask, does anyone know who owns the property that the Payday loan business will operate?

If you search "pay day cash for gold pahoa" you get the street address which you can plug into the COH website search and get the TMK and owner.

**I am not posting it because Carey suggested months ago that we do not do that, and I am not sure if I have the correct place or if there is a new second place coming. Someone here mentioned across the st from Luquin's I believe, and the one I found is on same side. Someone also mentioned makai but I think the one I found is mauka.
