I think Walmart is a desecration of Hawaiian
Lands, shut it down.
Why? Walmart pays a lot in lease rent for that space. More so than probably any combo of "local" businesses could and Walmart pays over $9 an hour to start here. how much do those little mom-and-pop stores pay their help? $7.25?
Likewise, the TMT will provide a lot more each year for the community as a whole than the protectors ever will in their lifetimes.

There have been a number of comments on this thread and other threads suggesting the TMT is basically obsolete even before it's built. It has been stated there are bigger telescopes planned in Chile. We will build space telescopes. Even dark side of the moon telescopes, etc.
There really are no obsolete telescopes. Every functioning telescope on Mauna Kea could be put to good use. Viewing time is at a premium, and if one person isn't using the equipment, someone else will.
Case in point, the discovery / confirmation of the Big Bang Theory in 1960. Bell Labs constructed a listening device for NASA, but NASA abandoned it for better technology. Two scientists asked, and were given permission to use the equipment for a project they had planned.
Here is the true story of how those two men, with access to an unused giant sound horn full of pigeons, discovered the Big Bang. As told drunk. (Skip the first 35 seconds if you prefer not to hear a monologue about various reproductive organs):

Adding several planned military helicopter high altitude landing pads also has no adverse impacts to Maunakea, much like the TMT.
That video about military exercises was from September 2011, four years ago...

Right now it is just a forecast and it was only officially recognized as an El Nino year about two weeks ago. It is still a forecast at this time."
No, it's not a forecast. We've been in El Nino conditions since early this year.

There are no plans to build helicopter landing pads anywhere near Mauna Kea's summit.
What is it that compels some to post made up sh*t here? I don't understand it. We need a new acronym. MUSH works for me, but will defer to better suggestions.

I think I bought a vacuum cleaner from that guy in the 2nd video, and he included another one for free and all for three easy payments.
