New fee when you visit Maku'u Farmers market

The Staten Island ferry is free. And the best way to see the statue of liberty.

That's true there is one free thing in NYC, but if you want to drive they will get your wallet where it counts. Plus once you get to staten island then what? Most of the time you turn right around and go home.

Even the flea market I used to live by in Cape Cod had a 50 cent parking fee. This is a capitalist country and, don't get me wrong, I am not in support of profit over everything, but in Hawaii it is not that bad and in Puna it is especially not that bad. It's all relative I guess. I mean if you want to just leave NYC you have to pay a toll. Even if you want to go to Staten Island a borough in the same city it is 18 bucks to just cross the bridge. If you miss your exit and get on the bridge that is an 18 dollar mistake. It's all relative.

Which is one of the reasons I live HERE rather than THERE. If I wanted NYC and all it's expense and expanse I would live there. I much prefer my little Puna slice of solitude.

There is no comparison of NYC to Puna. Just sayin.....

Believe me, I would rather live in Puna too…that is the result of a comparison I have had to make in my life and, yes, they are more often than not polar opposites. I'm just saying things could be worse. Paying 1 dollar that will used for a community center is not as bad as paying an 18 dollar toll that goes right into a 1%ers bank account. I'm just putting that one dollar in perspective.

The one dollar entrance fee at Maku'u Market is going towards building a future Community Center there.

Technically ... the $1 entrance fee is pledged towards construction of a community center.

It will be months (or years) before we find out how it was actually spent.

Just like all those "voluntary" road fees ... now being spent on lawyers, not pavement.

Any reports on how the traffic was handled today? Although I share kalakoa's concern for how the money will actually be spent, I am staying away until I see how well they organize the flow of cars into the crazy-quilt of parking areas. Based on the very limited capability in this regard shown before they had to stop people for money, I am skeptical that they can get this right on the first try.

Just another tourist trap now, groaning under the weight of its own popularity. Then the tail gate partying is starting to be more of the attraction. Attraction begets more attraction and rubber necking looky-loos. Congestion and inattention are a formula for what? Welcome to the every changing Highway 130, corridor to the Lost World.

Oh yes. Like the "parking lot scene" at any Dead show. I would gladly pay $1 to visit!

Report;

5 second delay to enter. No traffic on Highway. Puna Ukulele band performing. Mother's day breakfast of Potato Pancakes and roasted organic beets. Nice crowd as always, Got some veggies, gluten free local bread, inflatable mesh swim float/pump. Had a great visit.

To those who went to Pahoa instead; Congratulations, you saved a buck.
