Hawaiian’s First 787!
#71
after the third time, and I wasn't trying to be difficult, I simply asked if they could

This would have made the “I’ll have what she’s having” scene in When Harry Met Sally a lot longer, but even more intriguing!

terracore's stories about bad luck here are legendary. The thing aboiut them is that have all been perfectly believable!

terracore is the guy you see walking under a ladder and then tripping over the black cat in front of him resulting in him smashing a mirror. Wink

It's true my luck seems to run in one direction.  It's a bit of a running joke among people who know me especially if there is any dining out.  There is always a 90% chance that either they don't have what I try to order, I receive the wrong thing, or there is something seriously wrong with it beyond being bland (for example, food that is supposed to be hot, being frozen in the middle).

I remember one poor waiter coming back to the table after we ordered and was embarrassed to tell me that they were out of whatever it was ( I have long forgotten) so I ordered something else, and a few minutes later, came back even more embarrassed that they were ALSO out of that.  Well you probably know where this is headed, after the third time, and I wasn't trying to be difficult, I simply asked if they could tell me what they DO have, instead of me playing menu-whack-a-mole.  With 100% confidence he told me that he had already spoke with the kitchen and they were absolutely sure that with the exception of the three things I tried to order, they definitely could make anything else on the menu.

Wrong!  Bland and wrong!

Just like the cheese shop.

Hawaiian's "Unit 3" 787 Dreamliner (Tail No N782HA) took its very first flight on February 26th.

So, I've experienced the "1st class" suite on the Hawaiian 787 from LA to HNL. It beats every other carrier from the West Coast, but I believe the intention is to mainly use the 787 services internationally to Asia.  If that's the case, it's a loser. Even if they classify it as business class on international flights, the "suite" is small and cramped compared to other airlines. It's not terrible and certainly much more comfortable than the economy, even the premium economy or whatever Hawaiian calls it.

The cabin crew is great, meal service is OK but extremely limited, and I don't see how this new seat will compete with other airlines flying between Asia and Hawaii. Maybe they should stick to using the 787s on US domestic because I think they will be on a winner there.

Good points Tom. And who knows what will happen when the Alaskan merger eventually happens.

I did see in an aviation news article recently that they will be using the 787 starting in April to fly the HNL to JFK route replacing the A330, but what I read - only from April until August of 2025 at this point.

I'm no entrepreneur, but I think it's obvious that Hawaiian will not be able to compete with Asian airlines if its 787 product is used for those routes. If it wants to compete, it'll have to offer much lower fares than its competitors. Its current "1st class" product is perfect for US domestic routes as long as it offers more than a thin blanket and tiny pillow for a lie-flat seat.
