I can see how permitting VRs where the owner lives on site would discourage the vacation rental version of slum lords if there is such a thing. Not saying I agree with the way things are heading but I can see the argument being made.
My neighbors rent out (VR style) the top floor of their house which has a beautiful vaulted ceiling and well appointed kitchen while they live downstairs in what was originally the garage. So yes to renting out part of your house. I don't know about an Ohana or accessory dwelling unit.
ETA: A bedroom can be detached from the house by quite a distance like 50' or 75' if it is still technically attached by a roof. I am picturing a small outbuilding with a covered walkway. If so it is still just a room "in" the main house.
