I put on a mask and gloves and wiped my screen with alcohol just to read this thread.

This is true but it does help reduce the chance of breathing in someones sneeze juice. Ideally gloves, eye protection, face masks, and reducing direct contact with people will greatly reduce the transmission factor. FWIW: Lets not forget personal hygiene as some people seem to be allergic to that concept.
these steps would also be true for protective procedures to prevent common flu.

The US agencies said today that they really dont know how this virus works. Its obvious they doubt the numbers being provided from CCP and really want to send our people to china to get a feel of the situation there. They are watching the situation and are saying they will know much more in a couple weeks. Too many unknowns.

Influenza kills about 0.1% of people who are infected with it in "regular" years. We don't have a death rate for the coronavirus because most of the people that are known to be infected haven't died or recovered yet. But guesses range from 4-15% Using the low end of the scale that would make the coronavirus 2000% more deadly than the flu. Twice as deadly as smallpox. We also don't know the exact transmission rate but the most educated guesses range from 4-8 times higher than influenza. I've had the flu, it sucked. I would REALLY not want to have something that is substantially worse.

I've been working my airbnb guests from China for the inside scoop of the Wuhan virus and was just informed the last couple have been told they can resume their university teaching positions near Shanghai on Feb 19 when school reopens after the virus shutdown. And that a personal friend of theirs, on the board of regents, a government employee, clearly told them there is more to the virus than the Chinese government is disclosing.

Here's an updated article about the "off label" use of HIV drugs on the new virus: https://www.fiercepharma.com/pharma-asia...oronavirus

Interesting update 007.

Well epidemiologist (Dr. Eric Feigl-Ding)at Harvard said last night that this virus is RNA based with some unusual stuff in it. He basically went on to infer that it looks like a bio weapon without actually saying it looked like a bio weapon to avoid causing panic. RNA viruses tend to mutate very easily. An example was from tests of a family all infected from the same house showed that each person had a mutated virus which makes a vaccine very difficult to manufacture.
Also because its RNA based like other retroviruses like HIV it may be responsive to antiretroviral drugs. What this means in the long run is anyone's guess.

Just the observation from China's reaction to this infection and their doctoring of numbers they are trying to hide something. It also might lend credence to the theory that this is a bio weapon that got loose from their only Level 4 biolab located in of all places Wuhan.

Edit:: Forgot to add that WHO just elevated world to High and China Very High Alert.

You know the masks don't stop you catching it, right

In every photo I see of patients treated for the Wuhan virus, health care workers are wearing masks. This may indicate that some masks are effective to a degree. For instance, there are anti-virus face masks, and there are dust & bacteria face masks. Other precautions also protect health care workers as kander pointed out, gloves, etc.

Since first reported, the Wuhan virus has spread far more rapidly on social media than in the real world.

Yes Kander I've pretty much drawn the same conclusion and appreciate the info from Harvard. Sometimes I wonder though, since China is supposedly economically weak due to the trade war, perhaps it wasn't China who released it right before the highest domestic travel time. Hit'em when they are down sort of attack. Most factories are shut down according to my airbnb guests and that's got to be a huge economic blow. IDK but at least I'm putting down the computer and can let go of googling for a while. Too little info furnished with a major shut down by the last country you would expect to do a thing like that kept me up searching for answers. We still don't know but I think I know all I can at the moment. Whew.
