Abandonned development in HPP
#11
Aloha. We own the new yellow house (unpainted hardiboard) “progressing at lightening speed.” I just wanted to add that our builder is C&S Construction. We have been glad every day that we chose them. They have been super about meeting their commitments both in deadlines and giving us the house we want. We have been impressed with the quality at every stage of the build. And they’ve just been really great to work with. We also involved them in the plans and I think their recommendations helped us get the best house possible for our budget. As you can tell, we wholeheartedly recommend them.

They are building as time and money allows and it is an owner builder. They lived next door in the green house for a little more than a year and now live down the road. They are very good friends of ours. Nothing is abandoned. Geesh! Give them a break. They only poured their foundation a few months ago. I cannot believe how gossip & ridiculous rumors get going here sometimes.[xx(]

Jamie... if you think that slab is an eyesore, you must be very new to Puna. There are houses all over Puna that look like literal junk yards. There are buildings in disrepair and people who think it is OK to have abandoned cars and other s**t all over the place for the world to see. This lot is under construction... and it is on the ocean. Rust happens on the ocean, just try living there. The lot is not abandoned nor is the construction there.

Aloha au i Hawai`i,

I think Jamie does live on the ocean, and, if it is the Jamie I know of, is a pretty nice member of our community.

There is a place across from mine and one lot over on which construction stopped a couple of years ago. It is now slowly declining. It has been for sale for awhile. I have been hoping someone would buy it and either tear down the bulding (it is just a garage with a room on top) or finish it. I do not know the circumstances that led to the halt in construction. Too bad. The lot has a killer view to infinity. My bunny goes there sometimes.

I don't think that Hawaii County is going to condemn such places unless they become a direct hazard to adjoining properties...and that would need to be proceeded by a litany of complaints. Enforcement is always the issue, I think.

In the case of the property across the street and over from me, I think the market will take care of it and once it reaches the right price, someone will buy it for the spectacular view and, with all due respect, hopefully tear it down and build something that is exactly to my taste in close consultation with me and my bunny.

JamieR - Welcome to Punaweb!

I hope you stick around - we are an eclectic group - with MUCH to share - if you are willing to listen!

Do NOT be afraid to express yourself but please - do not "step on da toes" - we ALL wear "slippahs"!

I thank you for this opportunity to release "the hounds" - BEWARE the sarcastic INNER demon is loose!

There seems to be some psychological disease that has lately affected "Newbie's" - where the first post is "tainted". I have learned overtime to ignore the urge to "jump into the fray". I end up expending too much time and "negative" energy. Since, this is PERSONAL - I've made an exception!

I do not know YOU and you do not know ME.
My initial response was one of muted outrage - I say this with "tongue in cheek". For those who DO know me - I'm rarely MUTED and always OUTRAGEOUS!

Since, I do not know YOU - I will apologize for ANY and ALL statements that cause you discomfort - it is REALLY not a personal attack (I don't know YOU) - but it WILL sound and maybe even feel like one - SORRY!

As a "primer" on how minor statements can lead to FIREWORKS - I give you this post: http://punaweb.org/Forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=9633
Please pay special attention to my friend canhle's response on page 4 - I do not have his patience or tack.

I can not express in words my appreciation to: Susan, Carey, Kapohcat, Carrie and Devany for coming to my DEFENSE - but in a way I wish they didn't. Time and their kindness - has "defused" the instant explosion to a "sparkler".

I have tried to keep my "personal" life separate from PunaWeb - but it is an island and thus things are soon "common knowledge".

I do NOT need to give ANY excuses for someone's "perception" - least of all the happenings in my "personal" life! I save them for my - 'ohana holo'oko'a (extended family) which is as varied as the 'ohia (tree of varying heights and forms).

I digress - let's "Begin the Beguine":

quote
"We often walk our dog on the HPP ocean front"
With your concern for the 'aina hanau (native land) do you carry a "pooper scooper" with "doggie dodo bag" and use it - or do you let him decorate the landscape as he sees fit?
Is he trained to only "water" the telephone poles every 200 feet - or is he allowed to choose which "object" or "plant" is to receive his "blessing".

quote
"and over the last year"
This could signify that you have been "on island" awhile and have walked past while I was "alone" with my tractor doing "tractor things" - but never a "Howzit" (How are you)?

quote
"The other one appears to have been abandonned (sp - abandoned) as nothing has happened for the last 6 months or so."
If your going to insult my 'aina hanau use your spell checker.
Your "time continuum" and "spatial awareness" are awe inspiring - considering (just to mention the MOST obvious) that a telephone pole, trench, conduit, anchor bolts, string-lines, weed-whacking have ALL been done in the last FIVE MONTHS - and my 20' trailer has been moved on and off the property more times than I can count (just in YOUR time interval).

quote
"many unfinished grey brick piers of all sizes in front of it near the ocean."
Wow - a "psychic" a "clairvoyant" - you have "seen" my building plans - well you obviously can't read them if you think MANY are unfinished.
You must have great ability to see "near the ocean" from the STREET! With your "sensibilities" - I'm sure you would not TRESPASS on other people's property. SIGH - maybe it is time to plaster those ugly "DO NOT ENTER or YOU WILL BE SHOT or MAULED!" signs - and get that "dog eating - property critic eating" PIT-BULL that carries an UZI!

quote
"The exposed steel is rusting all over the bricks."
Congratulations - you are correct - the exposed rebar is rusting. It's one of those funny things that happens NEAR salt water. It is amazing how you can see that a football field away from the street.

quote
" It looks like the contractor is another sad victim of this economy and had to pull out."
As Mr. Tucker says "Assume the best and ask questions". I'll make sure to tell my concrete contractor of your assumptions; that he "is another sad victim of this economy" - if and when he has any free time from the 4 concurrent projects - and that he "had to pull out." I thought his vasectomy took care of that??

quote
"How long does the county allow an abandonned (sp - abandoned) development deteriorate in the elements before they do something about it?"
What do you care - you don't even LIVE on the SAME street? Who makes the decision that it's abandoned - YOU? Have you even driven/walked the REST of the miles of road in HPP to see what MIGHT be considered an abandoned property? So - obviously you have a "definitive" time span for someone who does not have the resources to HIRE a contractor to build their "dream" home - they must comply to YOUR standard of accomplishment!

quote
"It's quite an eyesore."
Picasso's and other cubist were once considered "sore for the eyes". "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and yet of ALL the properties with rusted cars, piles of trash, shanties - you declare MINE an eyesore. I can't wait to PAINT it - let's see am I in my "blue period" or my "rose period" - sometimes I just don't know what "time" of the month it is - MAUVE with FUSCHIA accents or BURNT ORANGE with PUMPKIN FACE accents. Well - we'll just have to wait an see - that is if I still have enough time left!

On to the next "post"!

quote
"That would explain why the piers are half built and left to rust."
NO EXPLANATION is required. Maybe I like RUST!

quote
"have not seen anyone there for months."
Is that TWO months, THREE or more like "the last 6 months or so."?????? Time is RELEVANT - at least Einstein thought so!

quote
"have not seen anyone there for months - maybe they are just not around when we are."
This statement makes EVERYTHING you wrote before it NULL & VOID!

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
That felt GOOD!

Not as good as the HOT TUB, CHAMPAGNE (I might have a "Vodka Salad") with my HIBISCUS HONEY latter tonight!

P.S. Glen - after my "close encounter" with your presumed bunny - I value his OPINION!
P.S.S. JamieR - if you stop by - BRING THE BEER![Big Grin]

Way to go Menehune. Well said. There seems to be a general attitude trending against private property rights, and it's a bit sickening.

Menehune,
When someone critisizes me, THAT is how I'd like it to be done! Well thought out and entertaining as well!
BTW, I've not seen your lot, so I can't have an opinion of it. I'm well aware of, since doing projects myself, the time it sometimes takes to get things completed. LOML is very understanding of this thank goodness.

Oh... I know that property! Isn't that the one that has been running the property values way down in the lower part of HPP??!! I heard the guy is just too lazy to get it done, always blaming the county or some such thing!! ;-))

Royall, he's just doing his part to make oceanfront affordable for other Punawebbers. ;-)

(well said, Mehehune)

and a house build is not a "development." It's one owner's project. From the title I imagined some major development gone bust.

I agree -well said,Menehune!

I hope the OP will come with the beer to say "Howzit"..

But I can see what caused the misunderstanding.

It still should have been "assume the best.."

Oceanfront is traditionally an area of wealthy people.

And wealthy people usually get their project going at nice speed.

I guess it's difficult for them to understand why someone in their

neighborhood is different.

And it's a fact that upscale neighborhoods have different standards

for an "eye sore".

Beverly Hills[Smile]:

Grass on the lawn is getting yellow- eye sore.

Rusty car - reason to call a SWAT team!!![Big Grin][Big Grin]

------------------------------------------------------------------

Well,if you buy in the reach neighborhood you "sigh up for"...

(The PW "devil's advocate" is off duty...[Big Grin][Big Grin][Big Grin])
That something from that type of thinking..

***********************************************************

DISCLAIMER: I don't agree 96% with "sign up " theory.

And ,as many on this forum,I am far from being wealthy[Sad]
