Adult store

Anyone else think this is a bad location for this type business? Right across the street from Keaau middle school

It certainly seems like a poor placement for such a venture and while I agree that Shipman should be quite capable of enforcing it's leases the issue also highlights the complete lack of zoning for most any kind of business in Puna. There are so few commercial acres that you might be hard pressed to suggest another viable location for a sex shop.

I would think that the Shipman business center would be a better choice.

So is the store going to allow minors inside??? Don't think so, windows are blacked out, inside is curtained off so anyone entering the store door cannot view contents, so whats the big deal, or are we supposed to pretend these stores don't exist? Owner makes a good point regarding bars and tattoo parlors in the same area. Frankly seems like a waste of time and effort to oppose a new business in Puna.

Have to wonder about some of the clientele though, in that location. Kids already have it rough, no need to gather possible offenders right in their path. Not suggesting all of them are sex offenders to be sure, but still...??? I agree that Shipman Business would have been a better location - for both the kids and the clientele.

Somehow I doubt that there are small retail spaces available in Shipman Industrial Park. It seems to be comprised of very large warehouses built by the tenants on long term leases.

OK, so now anyone who patronizes an adult store is a sex offender. Good to know, never realized that, lets see by that logic, anyone who visits the Harley store is a hells angels member, and anyone visiting a bar is a alcoholic drunk driver. I get

Don't forget the Hawaii Supreme Court ruling on this issue. If you’re going to treat an adult orientated business to a set of rules, you have to treat all adult orientated business to those same rules.

It is sounding to me like this issue is more of a problem in theory than it may be in reality. I can appreciate Shipman's position and desires but in the Oahu papers the store owner asked a reasonable question...

Honolulu has Victoria's Secret, why is my business different?

The school location seems to be the heartbeat and again it is the overwhelming lack of business zoning that is having an adverse effect on this sex shop venture just as it will on any legal business. Very, very few business location opportunities in Puna.
