nanawale -- jade vine question?

There is a vine-- I'm told it's called a jade vine it's at the mail boxes it's the blue/bluish flower that's growning next to the boxes any info? I'm told it comes in red colors -- I love it.....!

not sure what your question is, yes, blue jade vine, red jade vine and a yellow. blue is prettiest i think. wonderful example of the red, covers the entire monkey cage at the hilo zoo. hard to start from seed, but can be done. a very aggressive vine, you need to provide a extremely strong trellis and they do best if you have a big area and can let them go. if you do alot of trimming at once, or try to cut back when they get real large, many times it kills the plant.

They really ARE gorgeous. My neighbors have some and it does require some cutting back sometimes...they really are pretty, though.

I was sad to read that this morning because our hanai son cut mine by accident down to about 2" sticking out of pot - Feb 29 it was a sad little stick in a pot (he thought he was being helpful when he trimmed the vine out of the areca's)... and I thought it was gone!

But when i was getting coconut tree stump mulch a few minutes ago, there was my little stick with 6 new leaves! Yah! So i would take lquade's advise but was glad to see mine was the exception!

garden exchange oldtown hilo usually sells both the red and blue variety. the zoo and nanu maui gardens in hilo both have magnificent examples of the red, i can tell you the blue is currently flowering as my yard is full..publically i cant think right off the bat hopefully someone else will chime in for the blues.

I got mine at Rozette's. A word of caution: don't plant it where it can climb trees, mine reached the top of a big old Ohia in a couple of years and I had to cut it down because it made the tree very top heavy, especially in rain.

Now that I've seen one (blue) I'm seeing them everywhere-- kinda like the magic-eye thing.
I understand the grow tall thing as I'm seeing the flowers 20 feet high..
So beautiful-- now need figure where I want it ...

The blue (turquoise) jade vine and the red jade vine are actually totally different species even though they resemble each other. So the propagation and other cultivation rules are not the same. You can search them for info on how to grow them:

Blue -- Strongylodon macrobotrys
Red -- Mucuna bennetti

I have grown both of them from a one gallon pot and had flowers within two years. but don't expect flowers the first year as you would get from most vines.

I grew them up large dracaena trees ... they could handle the weight. These can get massive as was said.

Garden Exchange sells them but doesn't always have them. Another spot in Hilo to check is Paradise Plants. I imagine Rozette's is first stop if you are in Puna.
