Best/most important 5 movies ever
#11
El Topo. Probably impossible to find an original copy. Out of print. The after market bootleg was very poor.

Ed. I see now it has been re-released and available on Amazon.
This film would not be appropriate in the high school. What age group?

In no particular order...

Rear Window
Star Wars series
Godfather series
Dumb and Dumber
The Departed

Maybe those are just some favorites though [:p]

One film that I considered a real departure was Platoon. Prior to Platoon war movies were heroic bloodless tributes to W.W.II where John Wayne or Henry Fonda always made the right decisions for the right reasons. War was fought by heroes against villains and the heroes always won. Someone pulled a trigger and someone else conveniently fell over.

John Wayne made you want to sign up. Platoon changed that formula. Platoon made you want to throw up.

In Platoon war was terrifying, bloody and far removed from its origin and purpose. Soldiers were not battling forces of good and evil. The solders fought to survive, because they were there and they had no other choice.

After Platoon most every war film evolved away from the John Wayne school of war film. I did enjoy those John Wayne films growing up. Platoon immediately changed my P.O.V. I can't really claim it is one of the five best ever made - but it was a turning point in film.
Assume the best and ask questions.

I'm not really a film kind of guy but Kathy has good taste.

I'm surprised that "Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf" isn't front and central on that list though. . .

Antiwar films: King of Hearts starring Alan Bates, Das Boot (SCARIEST movie I ever saw!)

Platoon, The Deer Hunter, Apocalype Now, Coming Home taken all together as the American Vietnam experience (each of them had a portion that spoke to me re: my own personal VN experience)

Social history: The Grapes of Wrath, To Kill a Mockingbird

Other good ones I don't know how to classify: Pulp Fiction, The Fight Club, American Beauty

Funniest social commentary: Being There

Best all-around actor of all time: PEter Sellers

Maybe one that pertains to our current local political scene, as I see it--

"Bridge over the River Quai"

Please accept the humor in that. . .

I think the greatest movie is Dr Strangelove anti-war or otherwise i heard the director of Fight Club comparing his movie to Strangelove maybe for apocalyptic vision though I don't what message he trying to send. The closest thing to Strangelove I saw was a 2001 Tim Allen movie Big Trouble which was held from release due to events of 9-11-2001. Tim Allen's tv show was the worst and I didn't even like Tim Allen so wasn't expecting much from this unassuming movie I caught on Comedy Central though I thought of it as the movie of the 21st century till I saw "Letters from Iwo Jima."

Another war movie is 'The Purple Heart" remarkably politically correct considering it sprang from the darkest days of WWII about POW bomber crews in Japan.

Other people want to make friends- I just want to make money.
