keeping your staked lot staked

If you have a staked lot you might want to add some sort of metal stake (rebar or forming pin)next to the wooden stake. I bought a lot in mt.view 3 1/2 years ago. Every time i visited the property the stakes looked good as new. Recently the top of the stakes fell over and the part of the stake that was in the ground was rotten and hard to find and hard to tell apart from dirt.

The flagged wooden sticks are not the official markers, they are just indicating the location of the stakes that are set in concrete. You did not lose your stakes, you anly lost your markers.

thanks John. Can you elaborate on the survey stakes in cement? Are they small stakes? standardized?

It's metal pins set in concrete. If you know where the wooden sticks were and dig a little bit than you should be able to find them.

Often they are railroad spikes or Galvanized pipe.

So, John, when a lot is staked by a surveyor the stakes are placed in concrete? The corners of my lot in Discovery Harbour were staked with white PVC pushed over rebar when we bought it. In the six years we've owned the lot, three of the stakes have been removed and the exact location has become indistinct. I know the location of each stake to within a few feet, so is it 1) important that I locate them exactly or 2) likely I'd find something solid if I dug around? Keep in mind the ground in my lot is leveled, but pretty solid, lava.

When you buy a lot and have it staked the surveyors either recover the stakes or set new stakes in concrete. I don't know your lot Brian, but who would remove your stakes? It's not an easy job to do that.

It's possible, or highly likely, that my stakes were rebar pounded into the broken up lava. Not so hard to take that out. I don't see why anyone would WANT to take the out, unless the adjoining landowner wanted to build before me and put a rock wall onto my side. But that's far-fetched and there's no such building. Are there any other reasons, besides just stupid vandalism, for removing stakes?

Brian, stakes are not pounded into lava, they always are set in concrete. Unless the guy clearing your lot bulldozed them out they still are there.
