Has any one used spray foam roofing to extend the life of their metal roof?
Is it compatible with a roof water catchment system?

I retired, or decided that I needed a change at least, from Central Coating Company in California. They have quite a bit of info at their website. I left them in 2007 and moved to Pahoa. I spent over thirty years with them and left as operations manager. My first trip to the Big Island was to roof the Sheraton in Waikaloa in about 1980. It's now the Marriott. I would be happy to share what I know so feel free to contact me directly.

After applying the foam, you must coat it with an elastomeric coating. Why not just apply this over your metal roof? I know people do that to extend the life of their metal roofs.

Hi Cary,
We were heavily involved with developing the industry from the early stages. I went to work for them in 1970 when systems were just being developed. John Nolan, the owner, was always searching for new and better uses for the product as well as pushing the industry into the mainstream marketplace. We built panels for UL and FM testing and worked with suppliers that have merged and reemerged so often it's hard to keep track. From the mid-1990's we worked closly with Dean Kashawagi who at Arizona State University put together the Alpha Program which most of the major players are still referencing when promoting the concept of using a 'qualified' contractor to achieve sustainable roofing.
I remember making and then taking some panels to LA somewhere to run a tunnel test but I think it was to US Testing for some of our own reports. Maybe we met in another life. It really is a small world isn't it?

And yes hotinhawaii you're right, foam is plastic and the sun will break it down pretty quickly so it does have to be coated. Sometimes simply painting a metal roof is all that's needed but other times to fix leaks, particularly if there are a lot of penetrations or transitions in the roof, foam can help. Or maybe you want some insulation or maybe it will make the roof quieter in the rain. Metal moves around a lot on it's own but once you put foam over it all of that stops so no more loose fasteners. It all depends.
