If you read my original post you will see that "If you wanted to know about jobs in Hilo then why didn't you just say so." is exactly what I did, I asked about jobs on the Big Island for a mechanical engineer. I didn't even mention what country this person is a resident of, all I did was say where he was educated. The rest of you chimed in with stuff about visas, and I tried politely the first time to request that people drop the visa issue because from what I knew it wasn't an issue, and then more forcefully the second time because I wanted to keep the thread on topic with the information I actually was asking for.

I am well aware of the issues involved in dealing with immigration in this country, and so are the people involved, but that was not what I asked about, just look at the title of the thread. And I certainly would not pass on as gospel information I was given by some anonymous internet poster. Ed Smay explained why he might know a thing or two, but beyond that I have no reason to trust what anyone else here has said on the issue of visas. My daughter and her significant guy are just trying to gather information so they can make informed decisions and I was asking for very specific information to assist them: Is there work for a Mechanical Engineer in Hawaii? All other responses are just attempts to derail the thread off into something other than the original topic.

On the job front - as he has a number of reputable degrees under his belt he could also consider applying to the University or College in Hilo to teach or tutor while his girlfriend is studying.

We recently rented some space to a chemical engineer who does consulting work for foreign companies. He seems to have a good deal of work. I would imagine that other engineers with good experience and references could also find work to keep them busy and employed. For those with issues about immigration, I would say this "would you rather have a foreign national living here, paying taxes here and improving things for us here, or have them living somewhere else and doing the same thing in another country?"

Carol, if there is anything I can do for him (and for your family), please call. I may not know a lot of people in his field, but I'd be glad to try to help a talented person find good work, whether he's here as a resident or on a work visa. Talent is talent, 'nough said.

Sure, he might be taking a job from a US citizen, but honestly, if the US citizen is not qualified or doesn't have the experience, they shouldn't get the job. I've helped a number of foreign nationals get permanent "green cards" here, because they were genuinely better qualified. I'd rather see a foreign national embrace what the US has to offer and give their talent to us than to see them struggle somewhere else. If you look at the history, many of our greatest achievements were due to people that were still working on their citizenship documents while they did it.

After all, unless you are Native American, aren't we all immigrants?

Back to engineering - there mite be a spot in geothermal stuff or with people making/running wind turbines

HELCO could probably use some mech. engineers too for some of their new "green" projects or the much-rumored revamp of the Ka'u wind farm. Parker Ranch also has a large alternative energy facility, that they installed a few years ago. It wouldn't surprise me if they needed some help.

The new green tech at Helco is mainly co-gen work w/ turbines... and their much older hydropower systems, the windfarms & most other green systems are all IPP's, so you would need to go through the individual IPP's...

I didn't include Helco only because of their molasses like employment process.... most positions are filled in 6-8 mos, - some more... daughter could graduate before he would know about a job (& yes, do have 1st hand knowledge on this.... but it is worth a try, esp if he has turbine or fuel fired system experience)
