Thatched gazebo
#1
We have a 12 x 12 deck with one of those cheap 10 x 10 screened "rooms" that all the big boxes sell. It is totally rusted and the top is decaying fast.

I would like to replace it with something more Hawaiian, made from bamboo with a palm or thatch roof--like a small version of the canoe shed at Pu`uhonua o Honaunau.

Experienced help needed.

Jerry, I do know the newer town home on Kalanianaole near 4 Mile Beach has a synthetic thatch roof. The product is placed like a normal shingle roof & I seem to remember was fire tested & listed (may be something to think about...) I also seem to remember that someone on this forum was connected with the building & may be able to fill you in more...
Probably also less likely to rot & have bug and critter nests in it....

Googled artificial thatch, it's definitely out there. Now I have a new standard for my wished for house.

Make sure the thatch is artificial. I had a gorgeous palapa made of real bamboo and thatch. It did not stand the test of time. For that matter, I am not so sure about artificial thatch standing the test of time. Ten years? Probably not.

Glen, what do you consider the test of time? One year? Six years? How long did the palapa last?

Hey Markie - I have some lemon grass you can use for thatch! [Big Grin][Big Grin]

Your plant has gone wild - we give big clumps away all the time and two weeks later it is large again!!

RSI roofing in Kona carries the artificial thatch shingles. They are vinyl and look pretty good.

I estimate the palapa lasted about 3 years. It was quite dangerous by then and I had to remove it. Completely rotted. My future plan is to get a market umbrella (big umbrella) and artificial thatch to go over that.

KCat- $21 per SF???That seems high for roofing, esp when it replaces grass....
