I just want to thank everyone who contributed ideas for my film class. We've watched some great films, many of which were suggested here. A special thank you to the fairy godmother who gave us a bunch of the movies. I thank you, and a bunch of great kids thank you.

Carol it's good to hear your project went well. Were the kids pleased with the different movies you showed them? Did they get to comment on what they saw?
Will you be doing this on some level at the Middle School? It's such a great way to open up their worlds IMHO...good job.

Every student kept a viewing log with their personal reactions and then they wrote 3 different papers on the movies. The papers have been very open in terms of what they could write about, some compared 2 different movies (Cool hand Luke/Shawshank Redemption was popular with the guys) some wanted to write about certain directors, some about genres, and some wanted to just write about which movies they liked best.
Apocalypse Now really floored a lot of kids, and To Kill a Mockingbird was the one they wanted me to constantly stop so they could talk about it. For our last 3 movies we are watching one from one of my favorite directors Terry Gilliam (although Tidelands creeped me out big time) and then they are choosing 2 movies as a group.
I think at the middle school next year I will do an elective class on the silent movie era and then we will make some silent shorts. The primitive sound is what always ruins school video productions, so I figure we will go silent and then they will start their film making careers with the basics of visual storytelling.
This class and my psych class were so wonderful this trimester, the kids really rose to challenging material and subjects, and almost everyone handled it so maturely and with a really deep level of inquiry. I'm really going to miss teaching high school, middle school has its pluses, but I love teaching these guys who are right on the cusp of adulthood, they just wow me every day.
