"According to HELCO, several generators somehow got disconnected from the system. They're still trying to figure out how that happened."

We noticed the internet went out about that time so it had to have been a fairly large outage. We did forget to look out the window and see if the neighbor's lights and the street light went out, though. Even though we are in the middle of a village we are still off the power grid so we never know when the power goes out unless we look out the window and notice the lack of lights or lose the internet like we did yesterday.
I'm not sure if Hawaiian Electric was doing anything with their power grid or not. The day before yesterday one of their workers appeared at our door inquiring about the solar panels on our roof. He wanted to know if we had the proper sort of inter-tie but we aren't attached to their grid at all even though our neighbor's meter pole is right next to our driveway. I guess the Helco fellow thought that was our meter, but when he found out we were entirely separate from their power grid then he was okay with the panels. They may have been planning some sort of maintenance with their grid and were worried about miscellaneous things before they tried whatever it was? I'm just guessing here, but it seems pretty coincidental to have a Helco person making inquiries about things just before a big power outage. Kurt Wilson Kurt Wilson

glenwood: out as well. did not notice until this morning. however, it went out for a long period of time during our big island cooking club event (not held in glenwood). thankfully, it happened AFTER the party was over.

Had no problems out here, but then the nearest helco line ends 3 miles away and that's exactly how I like it.

Forty minutes? So what's the big deal! Don't you guys remember the the good old days of rolling blackouts three times a week?[][][]
