Hear, hear Rich! As someone whose marriage is central to my life, I find that sort of frivolous celebrity "marriage" to be far more of a threat to the institution than legally recognizing committed loving couples who happen to be of the same gender. If someone doesn't believe in gay marriage, they can simply refrain from being in a same sex marriage. The arguments against gay marriages are reminiscent of the arguments against interracial marriages, and marriages between Jews and Christians, only a few generations ago. The sky didn't fall when those marriages became legal, and it won't when gay couples can marry either. I hope Linda Lingle does the right thing and allows this legislation to become law. The fact that she hasn't done anything yet makes me think she may just let it become law without signing it. I actually wish this law really was full marriage rights for all couples, not just civil unions.
It absurd that some people think that their religious texts and beliefs justify oppressing others. A country that allows religion to control civic institutions and laws is a theocracy. Iran is an excellent modern day example of a theocracy, so was Spain during the Inquisition and England under Bloody Mary. I am thankful this is country is not a theocracy, and grateful for small steps like this one towards granting gay and lesbian couples the full rights they deserve as citizens of this country.

I wish I could share your sanguine sentiments about this country not being a theocracy. Sadly, what I see when I gaze across the fruited plains is indeed just that. No one who is not monotheistic (and married) has a chance in hell of seeking public office unless they wish to represent San Francisco, LA, or maybe Massachusetts. But all that aside, tomorrow is the big day. Let us all put our psychic energy toward helping Gov. Lingle either do the right thing or do nothing at all. And by the way you guys, I know KeaauRich and his partner and they are among the most stable and loving couples I know. They more than most deserve this meager nod toward fairness and equality under the law.

Ha DaVinci! As a couple we're stable, individually, not so much

That is probably true of most couples!

I love how that moron Calvin Say said in advance that they will not try to override any veto of Lingle's this year. Is he teaching some class at the Learning Annex on ineffectual political strategy or something. Civil Unions aside, if you are the head of a legislative body with a veto proof majority, why on earth would you just say, "Eh, go ahead and do what you want. We won't even bother overriding it even if over 2/3 voted differently." Does that guy stand for anything? Maybe that's how he got to be the leader of the House. Politics in this state seems to follow the rule of dumb and dumber! I thought CA politics was awful when I lived most of my life there, but in Hawaii, we might as well be in Alabama 50 years ago.

Having moved here from probably the most theocratic state in the union "Utah, a wholly owned subsidiary of the LDS church." The introduction of religion into the discussion of the civil union bill really sets my teeth on edge. I don't care if you worship a kumquat, religion has no business being considered in passing this most meager of bills to recognize the rights of a significant portion of our population. One can only hope that Lingle ignores the God squad on this one.

Joey you should know your Bible before you make such comments. Marriage has been defined as many things both in the Bible and throughout history. Since you claim to hold it in high esteem, I assume you also advocate killing of women if the groom discovers she is not a virgin. It's in the Bible, so if you don't believe that I guess you're going to hell. I imagine you post on other internet forums urging men to kill their wives. The Bible says that disobedient children must also be killed. Unless you were a perfect child, why haven't you killed yourself or other children you have come across that were disobedient? What about shrimp? God clearly says eating shellfish is an abomination. Have you firebombed a Bubba Gump's recently? As far as the Bible goes, it would be A-OK with God. Ever wear a cotton-polyester blend shirt? Well if so you are as much of an abomination as the gays in God's eyes. Kill any Gap employees recently? That would be A-OK with God too. Shall I go on? Since you don't believe in separation of church and state, in violation of the Constitution and therefore guilty of treason, perhaps you should consider living in some wonderful theocratic countries like Saudi Arabia and Iran. I hear they are lovely this time of year. 120 degrees and you can force your wife to wear a black bee keeper suit. Great place, check it out!
I seem to recall cautioning people against attacking Joey's beliefs. He is entitled to them. Moderator

Wow, regardless of how she decides, Lingle sure is milking this for attention. I'm surprised the new conference isn't at 11:59 pm. It's civil unions, aka Separate but Unequal which has already been struck down as unconstitutional in some states. It was mildly progressive in 1999 in Vermont. In 2010 it's honestly just embarassing and a far cry from some huge civil rights leap for us LGBTs. I hope it passes, and it will establish some important rights for us that choose to exercise them, but 17 years after the State Supreme Court said it was unconstitutional to discriminate against us, it would be a sad victory to achieve, especially when it means absolutely nothing in federal terms.

Since when has logic and the law regarding SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE made any difference to those who think they speak EX CATHEDRA? If there is anyone out there who can show me any concrete evidence of civil unions affecting conventional marriage, I would welcome being enlightened. Notice I said concrete evidence. I don't want to hear what God said, unless he was at your house last night and you have his comments on video tape.
