Can a 220v elec motor be changed to 110v
#1
I know some Emglo air compresors have a switch that changes them from 220 to 110 so i thought maybe i could change my craftsman 220 air compresor to 110.

Quite often you can take the plate off the end of the motor or on the side (not sure what sears is doing) but a lot of time there will be several wires and lugs that can be swapped to change from one voltage to another. My woodworking tools all have something similar to that with the wire diagram on the inside of the cover to follow. You may have to find a users group/blog about sears tools to get there input. You might get lucky if you call sears and ask them.

Remember, when going from 220 to 110, you will double the required ampacity and therefore will need to increase wire/plug/c.b. size.
I don't know why someone would want to go from 220 to 110 unless there was no space in the service box.

I like 220 but none of the temp elect poles have a 220 plug and they all have a 110 plug.

joeframer,

This may be too late--I haven't been on PunaWeb for awhile.

You don't need a 220 plug at the pole, direct wire it to a 220 breaker--which is two circuit breakers connected together. Most temp power boxes have space for four circuit breakers.

Thanks Markie, I know that trick to but at the time we were borrowing one of the neighbors power pole and it seemed rude to go digging around in his breaker box. Thanks again Joe
