My daughter and I were out shopping today. She's 16 and learning how to drive. I offered to let her drive home from the OrchidLand True Value.
She's a good driver, until today I had no idea HOW good of a driver.
As we pulled onto OrchidLand Drive we saw a red jeep on the side of the road. There was an older man standing near the jeep, gray longish hair holding a brown bottle. Could be beer or root beer, you know the type of bottle.
He started yelling at us. We paid no real attention and kept on driving. After a few minutes it became clear that he was behind us driving and getting closer. I told my daughter to turn onto a street we DON'T live on. She did. He went past us, then reversed and turned onto the same street.
We were getting scared, so I called my husband. He suggested I call 911.
I did. I called 911 and explained to the dispatcher what had occured. She suggested I not stop and not get out of the car. We drove down 39th till we got to Aulii. The red jeep was still behind us, gaining distance. I told the dispatcher and my daughter at the same time that we were now going to drive to Pahoa PD. We drove VERY fast down Aulii, he stayed right on our tail.
When we came to the stop sign at Aulii and the bypass road he got out of his jeep and approached our red jeep screaming at us and whoever was in the jeep that was following us was also honking the horn. We were terrified. I asked the dispatcher if she could hear this and she said "yes I'm recording it, he's screaming and honking at you". Once he was close enough to touch our car I told my daughter to pull onto the shoulder of the highway regardless of traffic opening and try to merge as safely as she could.
The jeep continued to follow us. At some point, we sped ahead and he fell behind and we arrived at pahoa PD where an officer was waiting OUTSIDE for us.
He scanned the road for a few minutes. Asked a LOT of questions. This was taken very very seriously.
I called my husband and asked him to come home. I told the police officer that I wanted to wait there till my husband was close to our neighborhood. He said he would escort us home and patrol the neighborhood till my husband came home. In fact, two police cars escorted us home.
He told me if we see this jeep on our street (I know it's not a neighbor never seen him before and I know most the neighbors) to call 911 right away. I appear to be the only one on my block with a red jeep wrangler.
I am thankful that the police took this seriously, my daughter and I were terrified.
Also, I'm thankful that my daughter was able to keep a cool enough head to drive during this fearful moment.
I guess my point is THANK YOU Hawaii Police Department. They were professional, friendly, and helpful. Made me feel at least a little bit safer knowing they at least spent a few minutes looking for this wack job.
