I heard on the radio that they will be celebrating the new dog park opening in Kea'au, at the Humane Society on Saturday. Where is the new dog park going to be located in Kea'au? Does anyone know?
Mahalo in advance.[

The dog park is just Hilo side of the Humane Society (130 after Keaau HS on the makai side) We have been waiting for it to open since we got WONDER DOG!
Did they announce when the opening will be & such?

afaik, it's open now. We took our puppy there for her first AKC 'Canine Good Citizen' class last Thursday. It's a nice space with two enclosed areas-- one larger than the other, separated by gates. Suggest you call the society office for days and hours open to the public. 966-5458

Glad to hear there is a place for the pooches to go! I would like to know if there are other areas suitable for off leash fun for the dogs in our household. Any suggestions on coastal areas that would be appropriate to take our dogs. Are the few beaches we have here open to dogs, or are they open to people only? Maybe I should start another thread about favorite places to take your dog. I used to take mine on shorter mountain bike rides but as they get older they need a slower pace. Any good hiking trail recommendations that are open to dogs?

Most County & state parks & beaches are not open to animals, on or off leashes, officially. As our Wonder Dog is deaf, we have not investigated off leash areas.... but we have seen some off leashed buddies at the far end (Puna Side) of Kings Landing ( this is a no animal area county park area... but...) also on some of the upper trails off of Stainback (there are big pigs) offer some wonderful 'enchanted forest' walks with dog, and one of the doggie social on leash walks is the loop around Liliokalani. Upper Saddle offers a slew of more rugged trails for the adventurous (ours has gotten soft in her 1/2 year of spoilt domestication, so not as willing to romp on the a'a!)

Thanks Carey, I'll investigate King's Landing a little more. Upper saddle sounds interesting, I like adventures so if the dogs can't hang I'll leave 'em back at the homestead.

In Kona there is one off leash dog beach at Honakahou harbor. stay left, park at the end, very short walk across the rocks to a nice swim beach. I have heard it called sunset beach. great scuba shore dive too.

Sorry to be a worry wart, but I have trouble with dogs at beaches. They love it, yes, but their worms love it, too. Hookworms particularly. A neighbor just took both his little dogs down to Kapoho and both came back with some sort of spiral worms, whatever they are. Good explanation here:

Oh, Gimmee a break. The conclusion of the article is: Have your dog checked for worms on a regular basis. Duh
