I have looked around a bit... but putting this question out there, as we think we have finally found out where our cesspool might be, and it may be right where we would like a patio....
(the HD map card was not all that precise, and it seems the cesspool is 8 feet closer to the house than we thought....)
So can you place a patio over the cesspool?

Carey,
We also have a cesspool. We were told, nothing could be built within 15' of it and you must keep the cap cleared, in the event you would need to have it serviced.

How do you service a cesspool? What would cause one to need service? I'm curous, because that's what we'll have when we build our own house.

Depending on the porosity of the rock soil around the cesspool, it may need to be emptied at some point in the future. You also may need to look inside to discover the cause if your drain line ever backs up. The inspection/clean out cap must be kept accessible in any case. The cap on top of a cesspool is not necessarily built to handle much additional weight. You would not want to put the weight of a patio or deck or anything else on top of or immediately adjacent to a cesspool as the added weight could compromise the integrity of the sides of the cesspool depending on how it was built.
