Just watching the preview is infuriating! This whole thing is totally bogus!

Not positive, but this seems like the preview is based off of one of the Civil Defense practice sessions a few years ago... there are annual drills utilizing worse case scenarios based on the data from the historical record. The emphasis of the drills is the fact that areas that historically were effected by the impacts of earthquake & volcanic activity were fairly uninhabited, now they have a fairly high population density to account for.

The only thing utilized in the preview that has not happened in recorded time is the 8.2 earthquake, so far the maximum estimated earthquake in recorded time is an estimated 7.9 off of Nalalehu in the late 1800's .

Interesting to note, there are quite a few photos on the preview that may be fairly familiar to many of us, as they are the photos from the damage from the '06 earthquake, along with many from the Royal Gardens & Kalapana lava flows.

We all know that we live on a hot rock...that just goes with the territory. Though, the style of this piece reminds me of the ones they do on Nostradamus or The Bermuda Triangle or Tsunamis...etc. Just a little sensationalistic, but possible.

This isn't aimed at anyone who liked it, but I loathe the Megadisaster series. It's like FOX news got in bed with the History Channel and a bad horror flick. The History Channel should be ashamed and feel dirty.

It's one thing to do an informative look at possible eruption and quake scenarios, quite another to use the Narrative Voice of DOOM and the stupid dum de dum dum music and visuals better left to one of those cheesy disaster pics. It's as bad as one of those but minus the budget to create an actual cheesy story about a separated family and their loyal pet, as they try to navigate their SUV's out of the disaster and the pavement crumbles under them and the lava chases them, and rocks hail down on them. Oh, and how about a scene with a tourist family around a resort pool when SUDDENLY the lava rolls into the pool area and hits the water, boiling a pool full of vacationers. At least make it popcorn worthy.

I only saw the linked preview on this one, but I've seen the Mega-tsunami installment.

well.... of course there is alot of animation and old news footage. but i think it is designed to make people think that this is not just possible but probable in some fashion. i got my first neighbors in my mt. view area from the 1984 eruption of mauna loa, they were from the HOVE that was still sparsely populated back then. they lost everything. people in puna are so used to kiluea and how slowly our lava travels. well, having seen mauna loa and the speed of those flows is a real eye opener. everytime someone tells me "it wont happen in my lifetime" i have a little laugh, as i have seen it once, and fully expect to see it again. and do remember, the 84 flow got within 4 miles of hilo town .

I use a fair amount of stuff from the History channel in my classes, but I screen out a lot for the overly sensationalistic tone. I don't know why they think they have to do that, but it renders a lot of material useless for educational purposes. The shows on ancient civilizations and natural disasters are the worst for going over the top. I like Kathy's description!
