I have a clear.com account from the mainland and I looked at their coverage map and it says I can get the 3g service here... BUT.. i called to inquire and they said... sure you can get it, but the device you have is only compatible with our 4g network. You would have to buy a new device. I'm a little hesitant because I'm quickly realizing that there are many factors that determine whether or not these types of services work out here. So the coverage map as far as i'm concerned is just an educated guess.
I'll keep you posted on the MobiPCS test.

lfoster, what languages do you develop in? If you cant get good mobi connection you could get a sprint android phone since they have (truely) unlimited data, you can tether with that. or get
http://www.virginmobileusa.com/mobile-broadband/ since they run on sprints EV-DO network you can use that also its unlimited for 40 bucks... forget att and there stupid limits. I can use 5gb in a day.
anyhow im a software developer as well. drop me a private message, we may have also have some other things in common... i just dont reveal too much on this forum, here...

Nowadays... mostly web applications. I have a couple SaaS services.
PHP, Perl, C, C++, Bash/Shell Scripting, AS3, Python and I dabble in C#/.NET Technologies. I was previously a linux sys admin/security consultant, so i always tend to lean towards LAMP/*nix centric technologies.
and YES! I bought a virgin hotspot today and im using it right now! It's not 10mbit but it's stable and usable. I can even code in a vi/shell window... the latency is much better than expected.
MobiPCS did not work... not even a peep out here in Fern Acres.
I think we have a winner. and check this out. The hotspot you get is the same device they try to sell you next door at verizon for $269 (unless you sign the contract)... and the guy at the cellular accessories store says that he thinks verizon and sprint are sharing towers in this area anyway...

Let me join the chorus of welcomes! I am also a software developer. Had no idea there were so many of us here in Puna. Once freed from the shackles of the corporate cubicle, we all seem to be gravitating toward the same sort of Paradise, eh?

Aloha Punaweb,
I am still a mainlander but my parents live in Pahoa and we get their as often as we can. Richardsons is superb for the kids as their are always lots of other kids to play with. And the last time there, we swam with 8 turtles that did not mind our close proximity. My 7 and 5 year olds were having the time of there lives. I am also an IT guy. If anyone is looking for backend development or management drop me a line. I was able to use my ATT service from Kapaho without issue. Fortunately I am grandfathered into the unlimited data plan.

yeah sprints data service is pretty stable in this area, i can get a consistent 1.2 down 512 up consistently and the latency is stable so yeah, you can use vi. im glad that virgin hotspot works. mobi is building there network out but they dont have nearly the coverage on this island that they do on oahu. but unlimited 3g is not SOO bad, its usable... but ill stick with my 7meg dsl..
here is a screen shot from my evo
