Hi - I'm very conscious of the birds that live around my house. I have many birds on my property because of all the bulldozing taking their land and because of all the dog food all over the place (we have 5 dogs and a pig). Today I saw a type of bird in my window that I have never seen before. I was wondering if someone may know what it is. It looked a lot like a Cardinal but even more beautiful. The bird sat on a bush next to my window and allowed me to feast my eyes on her for a couple of minutes before she flew away. She was pure white with black wings,a bright red head, and a yellow beak. She was kind of "fluffy". Please let me know if you've seen these birds and if you know what they are. Aloha ~

What subdivision do you live in, Sue? Here in central HPP, we are beginning to see just a few of these beautiful birds, and I'm hoping some settle on or near our place.

This week I have seen 2 Nene down by the cliffs at the bottom of Makuu, and last week I saw 4 wild turkeys about half way down the subdivision. It seems like I am seeing more variety of birds over the last few months, I wonder if the drought is causing birds to move into subdivisions where there is more water available?

I don't know, Carol. Waikoloa Village is literally swarming with wild turkeys, and it's a desert climate with almost no rain. They seem drought proof. Other birds, could be. My place is all green, as many birds as ever.

Okay, maybe someone knows this answer, 'cause I can't seem to find it myself. There is a bird that sings, and sings and is loud and happy, happy, happy...his song is the same but it goes through several different types of chorus. My neighbor thinks it's a thrush or something, but I can't even tell you what he looks like.
Our lovebirds always get excited when they hear him in the mornings.

Hi, Kathy H - THAT'S THE BIRD! It's a yellow-billed Cardinal. I've lived in HPP since 1989 and yesterday was the first time I've ever seen one. Thank you!

Carrie - many years ago I was so interested in that LOUD singing bird that I actually looked for it online. It is a thrush and it is a LARGE brown fat bird! It may have white around its eyes and a yellow sharp curved-downward beak, if I remember correctly.
