Have cleaned and prepared around 40 pineapple starts. Hope to get them into the ground tomorrow. Depends on weather of course... we all know how that goes. But, I am hopeful! Yayyyyyyyyyy

Wow, today was productive. We used the auger to drill and planted over 50 pineapples. Thank you Dick! Tomorrow if it doesn't rain we hope to dig and prep for at least 100 more. I am guessing we can complete around 400 in the field we have made. Yeah, I know, I never do anything in a small way but hey, we have the land, we have the soil, we have the tools and I have some wonderful help from the youngsters I hauled to the beach all summer. It is very satisfying (even if it took three kinds of pain pills & muscle relaxers, and a 30 minute steamy soak in the bath to get me here to bed. Tomorrow is another torturous day... but labors of love really. I must tell you all how very thankful I am every day that I have the chance to experience this new adventure in life. For all the things I have done wrong, things that have gone wrong, people who have maybe taken advantage of us.... they are all small compare with the wonderful people from Punaweb and the great adventure I am living. Life IS good!

Congrats on your project. I would love to see some pictures of the field if that's possible. Any chance you planted any of the white pineapple's? Great job, sounds like you and the crew did allot of work. Very nice people here for sure. Everyone so easy to help members out. Glad I found this place. Good luck with the rest of the project.
Take care,
Steve

I like all pineapples, but the white are nice also. Wish, i would have know of this sooner. I could have gotten you a few from a buddy. He just left the acres to house sit for family member on Kauai. I'll see if he's going to be back anytime soon. If he is, I'll see if he can take some cuts and root them for you. I know I'll be planting some whites at my place this summer. Good luck and I'll post if I can get you some cuts off his plants.
Take care,
Steve

Pam, can you tell me how you use an auger to plant pineapple starts? I guess I don't do large scale projects. How deep do pineapples need to be planted. (sorry to sound dumb, just don't know..... :-)

Enjoy the day! Ann

Asly, this is not a weird question. Unlike most of Puna, I am not on rock... I have 13 feet of deep rich red clay soil. It was a cattle ranch for 25 years, then sat fallow for 15, then I bought it 6 years ago. So the auger digs a hole a bit under 12 inches wide. I am loosening soil for two feet for the roots benefit. Then we just put the soil back into the hole, cover it in mulch that I have been brewing for 6 or 8 months and then you pop the pineapple into the middle of the hole only about 2 inches. I had a flattened area grated by a big old machine last year so it is packed hard and tight. In most of Puna I imagine the pineapples would be grown in cinder/soil and maybe even in raised beds. No auger for that for sure!

Hope that helps.... Pam

Steve and everyone, I welcome starts from all sources. MAHALO. Whites would be very cool. I missed out on a bunch on Hamakua coast on freecycle... just timing and the luck of the draw. I have room for around 500 so bring them on!

My email is pslamont@yahoo.com

Smile Pam
