Why some people don't buy in Pahoa
#11
Second you a second time Daniel .... AND they have some pretty good beer prices "out" there to counter the cents and gas.

Malama Market has 40-60% higher prices than Foodland nine miles further.
That is $140-160 spent instead of $100.
Who is talking cents here? May be their volume could be bigger if they charged less?
It's good to support local business if you don't receive local wages.

Let's hope Longs will make things in Pahoa a little more competitive. Because if they don't and they just match Malama Markets prices....I and many other consumers will continue to shop Hilo and never bother going into the store. People do not want to be convenienced as much as they want to save money.

Ya, that's savings, drive 30 miles to save by shopping in Hilo, must get really great gas mileage.

Malama has selective things on sale. So if I am getting the sale items and I need one piece of fish for dinner... no need go to Hilo. If I am doing the $100 shop and specials/coupons, hilo it is. If it is the big once or twice a year restock - Cost Co.

Dick,
Most of us who are still working commute to Hilo, so to save money we pick stuff up in Hilo on the way home. I find that I have to mentally map which stuff is cheaper at which stores. Even in Hilo there is a huge difference in prices on similar items from store to store.

Selective? The whole store is decorated with "sale"tags like a Christmas tree: 10 cents,20 cents,10 cents again. The only thing missing is blinking Christmas lights : 1 blink for 10 cents,2 - for 20.

To answer some of the above questions about pricing at Pahoa Island Naturals...
Advertised items, such as on the poster, are the same price at all our stores. If there was a mistake it was simply a mistake and gets corrected when brought to our attention.
For other prices, we are in the process of standardizing most prices between Hilo & Pahoa. For sale items (other than our flier), sometimes one store gets a deal that the other store didn't get, so sale prices can be different. As a larger store, Hilo is sometimes able to get more sale deals. Sometimes the lower price is in Hilo, but just as often the lower price is in Pahoa. Funny, we don't get too many complaints about the lower prices!
Thanks for your interest.

That yogurt was on the flyer and they didn't give me that price when I asked.Instead I was told that the store" decided not to give that price anymore" when I mentioned that the other people got it.
I didn't argue. But I am not coming to that store again.
