Just where, out of curiosity, is this 20 acres of designated Park land located in HPP? Or if there are several locations...which is the primary one they are discussing with the county?
The first problem can I see is restrooms. They need to have one...but most of HPP has no water lines which means catchment.

Hawaiian Shores has a park with a large swimming pool, bathrooms, covered and uncovered barbeque tables, barbeque pits, hose hook-up, large sink for washing dishes, swings for kids and a field for kite flying and tennis. I haven't been there for years but it was really nice back then. There was a small fee to swim and an ID that you are with a Hawaiian Shores resident was needed to get in the gate. All was fenced and gated. Maybe we could learn how they did it and how they police it. I just learned that Hawaiian Shores resident fees are now $300 a year! I guess they don't work with volunteers.

The current HPPOA office and community center are on one of the twenty acre parcels and already has bathrooms. Another 20 acre parcel is across 16th from that one, that parcel could be initially developed with walking trails without really needing bathrooms. Many parks put barriers at the trail heads that let pedestrians through but not vehicles like quads. Dirt bikes would require a little more effort to stop, but they can be heard from pretty far away which would make catching perpetrators a lot easier.
Seeb and Royall, A charrette is different than a design committee, it can be a great way to get stakeholders to make their wishes known and in this case would focus on what CAN be done with available resources like volunteers. But it could help get a master plan happening that current residents of HPP could get behind. I grew up in a small town (about the same size as the current population of HPP) and we had a wonderful park that was built entirely through volunteer labor, going back to the original pioneers who first cleared the land and donated it to the community. We could do this, unless everyone just focuses on the problems before it even gets built. I think the way to do this would be in increments, as HPP fills in we should see less and less vandalism like dumping, just because there are more eyes watching. Carol

This is looking great! When I ran for HPPOA a few years ago this was one of the things I was hoping to help accomplish. We already have a park at the HPPOA office. Lets simply make it bigger and better.

I too will help out when I get back to the islands. I think walking paths through the ohia's is a GREAT idea. Plus can plant some other hawaiian plants along to make it look even better. Can't beat a walking/jogging nature hike. Plus I think it would fairly easy to construct. One could also put in a restroom if they dug a cess pool could have a small catchment tank (green container type) then run a small 12 volt solar powered pump to the toilet. Not a just any park but a GREEN park!
