In these final weeks of the election we appear to be seeing both Mayor Kenoi and his council buddies doing their best to come to the aid of Guy Enriques and Emily Naeole-Beason in the two council run off races.
Mayor Kenoi is floating a $56 million bond at council which is loaded with pork for Districts 5 & 6 though as presented there is nothing to ensure that the bond money will go to the stated projects. It is telling that in the list of priorities the Mayor listed there is nothing at all for Dominic Yagong's District 1. When a motion was made at council to actually have these proposed bond funds be tied to the projects that motion was voted down with the help of Enriques and Naeole-Beason.
Now in today's Tribune-Herald we learn that efforts by Dennis Onishi, as Chairman of the Finance Committee, are apparently slowing down the controversial Kamaoa Road process till after the election.

Novice Dennis Onishi, a first term councilman chosen to head the Finance committee, is quoted as saying "his unfamiliarity with the scheduling process led to the delays". Yeah, nothing like using not knowing what the heck you are doing as cover.
Not much of a surprise I guess. Kenoi, Enriques, Naeole-Beason, Onishi and Yoshimoto are likely the most anti community bunch we have ever had in county government. With Kenoi at the top.

Not just your opinion, Rob. The transparent effort to sway voters began as early as July when Kenoi and Emily, along with an entourage of Kenoi administration officials, made a joint appearance at HPP promising a park. People at the meeting even commented that they must be worried about the election to go to such lengths. (Kenoi was clearly embarrassed by some of Emily's bellowings at that meeting, but couldn't distance himself. I couldn't help but be amused as he visibly cringed.) This effort has only accelerated now that Emily is in a tight race, and Guy Enriquez has been added to the probably illusory gravy train.
Voters, don't be fooled.

ME: But, Kenoi went out of his way to say it would be a 'Toyota', in context -- inferring a reasonable cost in a park. $5.5 Million? I don't think even the Acura costs that much! And the land is being donated, right?

Toni, the price only becomes a factor if they actually intend to build something. [  ] So far, no binding or substantive guarantees or set-asides have been made, just election season promises. And yes, you're right about the land being donated . . . assuming things ever get that far.

I suspect you are right. I think though, Ms. Naeole is the one who is being duped by her savvy cuz. She really wants to put in a park, but 'her' way, with her at the helm. I don't think she has a clue as to the 'politics' of people like the Mayor. If re-elected, he will string this along, do only as much as is needed to use it for his own re-election campaign.

Got caught up in your blog on Big Island Chronicle "Why I am supporting Fred Blas" which I copied below in part:
"It is reassuring to me that Fred has been in business and has had enough success to retire. Operating a business well enough to sell it profitably to another person requires some skills. You have to be able to handle the books and read the balance sheets. You have to be able to handle your employees and customers. You have to deliver. If you can’t count the beans, control your costs, provide a useful product or service you fail. So Fred’s history is a level of experience I think we can all welcome. Our county could use some of that."

Rob, from your writing, it is apparent that you are backing Fred Blas, in large part, because you believe he has successful business experience and feel that experience would be good for our county. As a relative newcomer to your blog, it appears many people rely on your opinion and depend on you to vet candidates. Just curious if you independently researched or verified Fred's claims, or did you just take him at his word about his business background?

I take everyone at their word until I discover a reason not to. I've know Fred for about five years and have no reason to doubt him. Our newspaper people are in a better position to check backgrounds and are paid to do that kind of stuff.
Do you have a basis for concern or just curious?

rob, thanks for your question. after reading your guest blog in big island chronicle on 10-14, talking about fred's business successes, i decided to do a bit of research on my own. i was curious, because i couldn't find anything on the web about fred's past. ultimately, i found one mention of a lawsuit for conversion in san diego county against fred and fred blas firestone, but no other details were available. i called the court and was told the records were in storage at iron mountain. yesterday, those records finally arrived and they reveal a different story from what fred's been telling. those documents are now being forwarded onto you and others who hold the public's trust. these court records show a history of charges against fred and fred blas firestone. the record is replete with allegations of conversion, breach of contracts, breach of warranties, defaults,restraining orders and ultimately Chapter 7 bankruptcy. This is the public record. I appreciate you providing a forum so fred can respond, and so that the voters of District 5 can make an informed decision come tuesday.
