what do you think of the Kehena area?
#1
she says, continuing her quest for the right house (NOT land) ...

I already ran the search function and read all the old topics that mentioned it.

this is another area that speaks to my spirit, even though I have no intention of frolicing in the nude at Kehena (don't worry!) and I'm straight (but there's room for diversity, right?)

Property costs more down there, and I'm wondering if that's for a good reason, or is it some spillover from NYC, LA, Maui or other artificial trendy type smoke and mirrors.

I like the land there, the air, the light, the ocean, the feel of it. (having come to terms with the fact that I'm not an ohia forest person and prefer palms, bamboo, bananas and hibiscus to the woodsy look).

I'm looking for a place to write and garden/landscape, NOT commuting to Hilo, and my son who is joining the venture does artistic masonry, tile, patios, rockwork, etc.., and I would hope there's enough going on in Puna to keep him going.

But enough about me. I'm more interested in hearing any opinions you have of the area, how Kehena and Palisades compare (other than lot size).

I should say too, that I'm not picking unseen places off the map but places that speak to me when I explore them. I live in Hilo, so I've been spending time on the road driving around. I like Hawaiian Shores and Kaloli Point area too, but I'm just not finding the houses that appeal to me that I can afford, so I'm widening the net -- and suddenly feeling much more at home now that I finally let myself wander down that way!

The area is probably higher because of the beaches nearby, the beauty of the area, and the ability to have an ocean view from much of the area. those are pretty good reasons. Lots close to the ocean in HPP and Hawaiian Shores are incredibly expensive without any beach to go to. This is probably one of the cheapest areas in Hawaii where you can have an ocean view home (not condo) near a beach. It's amazing, and thank god, it has not become more developed. I think part of the appeal is the Red Road. Anytime you leave your home you have at least a few miles on a beautiful road with an ocean view, which is not the case for most of the rest of Puna. If you can live with a smaller lot, Seaview is much cheaper than Kehena or Palisades.

its a great area with good views and friendly neighbors...the down side is smaller 1/2 acre lots, higher prices...you might have to import water during the dry spells depending on how large your tank is...also got to import soil if you want to grow things...its a trek if you go to pahoa or hilo...pricey on gas, if you have to go to town alot.
