Double Murder in Hilo
#1
FYI:

https://local.nixle.com/alert/4958849/

Police are investigating a reported shooting incident that occurred last night in Hilo that left two women dead.

At about 11:20 pm on Monday night, police responded to several calls of gunshots in the 600 block of Leilani Street. Responding officers conducted checks within the residence and discovered two victims with apparent gunshot wounds.

Both victims were transported to the Hilo Medical Center where they were pronounced dead. Police are withholding the release of the victim’s identity pending positive identification and notification of the next of kin.

Detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigation Section responded to the scene and are continuing the investigation.

Sean Ivan Masa Matsumoto, 34 of Hilo, was taken into custody at the scene on suspicion of first degree murder and two counts of second degree murder.

Two children who were also at the residence at the time of the shooting were uninjured and are under the care of family members.

Something is seriously wrong on our island. Another tragedy, and families torn apart. We need to take care of each other and our neighbors. This cannot continue. My heart is heavy. [V]

It seems odd to me and a bit heartless that today's Tribune posted the identity of the victims even though the police had not, pending notification of kin. I can't imagin learning about the loss of a loved one by reading about it in the morning paper. Far too many senseless murdres lately, especially for such a small community.

From the HNN article:
quote:
"He said when he went to the hospital they found cocaine and heroin in his system, but he says he doesn't know why because he smoked meth," said Flores.

SandyS - completely agree with you. That was disgraceful and thoughtless journalism from both the HTH and the reporter, John Burnett. And Midnight Rambler - I'm just speechless. What an incredible quote. I don't suppose this is going to be used as a defense, is it? "Your Honor, I didn't know what I was doing because I was given cocaine and heroin instead of meth".

The HNN quote that Rambler posted reminded me of a show I saw long ago.

I've never watched an entire episode of the show "Cops" (not sure it's even still on air.) But several years ago I saw a snippet of it where a woman was being questioned about drugs. She was very indignant and quite adamantly - and quite proudly - told the cops "I'm not a drug dealer, I'm a prostitute!" My friends and I just about fell out of chairs laughing.

But all these murders lately is scary and no laughing matter. I can't ever recall a time when there were this many murders.

"Cops" is still on air, spunky. I enjoy watching it when I can. And yes, there seems to be a significant rise in shootings/murders recently here, but on the other hand the cops seem to have caught most if not all the recent suspects. What happens next is another matter of course.

What the woman said on Cops make sense - prostitution is a far more honorable profession than drug dealer.
See here an example of how a drug dealer has ruined some more lives. Prostitution is legal in many countries, and why not.

Only in Hawaii would the investigating officer have the same family name as the main suspect!
