As a gun owner who hopes to relocate to Hawaii soon, I did some research.
Yes, you are required to register ALL your guns within a few days of arriving. If you don't and they notice you at a gun range, outdoor shooting area, etc and run your ID, pretty sure you are going to the slammer and your guns are gonna get melted.
You can't have any handgun magazines bigger than 10 rounds.
You can't get a carry license, it won't happen. Big problem for me, as I do carry quite often in Oregon. But, I'll get over it.
With no option of carry (concealed or open), and the 10 round limit, handguns don't make any sense to me in Hawaii. I'm gonna sell all mine before I move.
Now, oddly enough, a AR-15 with a 30 round magazine is legal. Which is good. They are really handy and effective on pigs. [} ]

Wow I guess you're all in the militia to protect us against the British. Short of that, there is certainly no right to have guns, or at least a gun of any type that wasn't around in the late 1700s or so. Courts get things wrong all the time such as saying slaves have no right to sue because they are property.

I bought a 20 ga shotgun a few months ago.
Had to get a permit, paperwork, wait around a week for the background check. Bring in gun within five days of purchase.
Couldn't get a permit for a handgun without handelers course.
Cost about 200 dollars.
Cant ship a handgun form the mainland either without the certificate.
Or you wont be able to pick it up from the dealer without it.
Was told that I could avoid that if I brought it with me on the plane.
But then you have to check it wih your luggage. That's a gamble.
I bought a handgun when I lived in Tennessee.
Walked into the dealer. Picked out a gun. Showed them my Drivers lisence. They ran a check in about 5 minutes. I was walking out of the store with my new gun in under 20 minutes.
One Thing I can always be sure of is that things will never go as expected.

I don't think they could ever outlaw guns here. It has been found unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in Chicago and DC recently.
There are a lot of hoops to jump through in Hawaii, however we have the lowest rate of gun deaths of any state.

Before you pack a gun in your suitcase to bring to Hawaii, you might want to check the TSA rules. They do x ray all checked bags now and the fine is $10,000.00.

I decided it wasn't worth the hassle and besides everything rusts where I live and my guns would have been junk in a year.

I've carried for nearly 30 years and rarely felt the need or desire to carry a high capacity handgun. In casual dueling tree elimination competition (loads of fun) I've beat out the guys carrying high caps on several occasions with a wheel gun. I currently carry, depending on mood and circumstances, a 6 shot .45, a 6 shot .380, a six shot .38 or a 7 shot 9. I feel perfectly confident with all except perhaps the .380 but going for a walk what else. I have no need or desire to lug around a fat and heavy high cap pistol. I sympathize with the inability in Hi. to get a carry permit. That needs work.
It was my understanding that all high cap magazines were outlawed in Hi., for both handguns and long guns.
I'll give most of my guns to my sons before I make the move. I was planning to give them to them eventually anyway. I'll keep a couple of carry guns and a few hunting guns. I'm thinking a bird gun, a pig gun, a varmint/plinker gun and a goat gun
PS: If it turns out there is an active shooting club that I can afford to join I might bring something suitable for that purpose.

There are enough guys around here with anger management issues, that I'm glad they are limited to carrying knives and baseball bats. They do enough damage with those. To me, the fact these people are limited in weapon choices more than makes up for any restrictions on my rights or any of you guys moving here.

KathyH - Most of the murders on the island which happen by gun, seem to be by people that were not supposed to have a gun in the first place; meaning once again, that when you outlaw guns, only the criminals have guns.

And one more time. Those are not just your rights Kathy H, they are mine also and you have no right nor authority to limit mine. And as far as the militia stupidity goes, the Supreme Court just settled that crap once and for all by deciding the THE RIGHT TO KEEP AND BEAR ARMS, is an individual right that cannot be abridged by the state or local municipalities. Those state that have concealed carry laws have not experienced any increase in crimes committed by CCW holders. Rather the increases are the usual, career criminals coddled by the bleeding heart liberals, who value this scums rights over those of law abiding citizens.

I have every right to be content with the state of the law or discontent. We all have that right. Some here don't like it, and were free to comment, and I made a comment about my having a comfort level of the laws here.
I made no legal or Constitutional argument, nor in any way indicated that the world should accommodate my wishes. So lighten up, Dick!

I did mention that I have had a carry permit in Wa. State for many years, but very seldom over those years (from age 22 to age 57) did I carry a handgun. And I have never shot a person. And yet I have fired probably 20,000 rounds-almost all handloads.I did a lot of target shooting and handload developement for accuracy. This activity is a dicipline, and the striving for perfection. I also competed for years.I finally threw out all but a couple of trophys I won.
And yet, one time, on my 22nd birthday, I did have to use a handgun in self defense, when a raving looney smashed his way through my kitchen door about 11:00 pm that night. The fact that I had been raised around firearms, and reloading and target shooting,AND firearm safety, since age 14 gave me the skills to confidently handle the situation without having to shoot the dude dead.As usual, when the police came aqnd hauled him away (unshot and very nuch still alive)they knew him by name as a local troublemaker with a long record.
People that responsibly deal with firearms don't want to require others to have to own one.But those of us that do own firearms require the same curtesy from those who chose not to own them.
My Dad taught us kids how to shoot and safely handle firearms in the hope that, should we ever have to fight in a war, it might give us a bit of an edge in combat.None of us ended up in a war, but maybe my Dad's teaching helped me handle that breakin by not killing the idiot, because I had the confidence to NOT blow him to hell right away.
