I'm looking to get a CC that will allow me to acquire air miles. Currently I'm with BofH and very happy with them. Before I check with them for what they have available I wanted to ask the question, who offers the best deal on miles per dollar spent and what I might expect for the annual fees. Are the fees minor compared to the benefits acquiring the miles? Do higher fees usually equate to more miles on the dollar?
Sorry for all the questions but I've never gone this route before and it is all new to me.

I would research cards carefully. Some are tied to specific airlines and when you use the card they give you double miles. Some are good for points which can be used on any airline. Depends what airline you want to be loyal too!

Citi has a VISA card associated with American Airlines, $750 spending within two months will get you 50,000 miles, and if you spend $10,000 within the first year than you get another 50,000 miles. One mile for every dollar spent and no fee for the first year. That's the best deal out there right now.

I am grooving on my Continental One Pass card from Chase. You get one mile Continental mile for every dollar spent. In addition if you shop through Continental's Shop One Pass website you get miles just for shopping and extra miles if you use your One Pass credit card.
I may be more loyal to Continental as they fly the non stop from Houston to Honolulu daily. I never pay baggage fees for myself or anyone that checks in with me.
When we were there last I went through the Shop One Pass site to Sears. Ordered a weed whacker online, paid with my Continental card and drove to the Sears in Hilo to pick it up. You have to be careful though as not every store allows in store pickup.
Edited to say - I was able to use my Continental miles for my round trip from Honolulu to Hilo on Hawaiian airlines too.

Didn't Continental merge with United? Do they still have a separate frequent miles program? (I wonder if I could use my United frequent miles on Hawaiian?)

I have a CapitalOne Visa card that earns two miles for every dollar spent with miles redeemable on any airline with no blackout dates or capacity controls. I even get frequent flyer miles for the free tickets because CapitalOne credits my account for the amount paid. All the airlines see is a normal ticket purchase. Redemption amounts are based on the price of the ticket, and not the destination as in frequent flyer mile redemptions. This card requires a pretty high credit score to qualify, but it has a low annual fee and the usual perks such as rental car insurance, etc. Go to CapitalOne.com for details.

We are very happy with our BOH Hawaiian Airlines card. Like the fact that you can transfer miles from one Hawaiian miles account to another with no fee. We get double miles for travel on Hawaiian and any dollars spent on Hawaiian airlines. And, I believe that the rewards come with the fewest miles needed to be redeemed for mainland travel. We use our card for everything....gas, groceries, bills, etc. so the miles add up quickly. You can use miles to book a flight one way....and then pay for the other way if you do not have enough miles for a roundtrip. It is a very easy and flexible card to use.

Ditto what Loretta said, plus Hawaiian Air's Visa offers a 20K or a 30K miles bonus for joining up with them.
When you use the Visa for everything you buy, those miles really add up FAST! My husband & I have already used miles to travel back & forth from Oregon round trip & we have almost enough for another round trip apiece next year. For us, we can get round trip tickets for the 2 of us just about every other year.

We use the BofA Hawaiian card and pay for everything we can on it then pay it off at the end of the month. When we first signed up we got the bonus miles and a companion pass as well. Think it was 50% off. We have mad 3 trips back to the mainland this year.
