I don't want to take away your right to bear arms. Rifles are quite a different issue than handguns. When the constitution was drafted, handguns were not very viable as a weapon.
In this country approximately 500 children are killed by handguns every year. These are accidental shootings where either the child kills himself or a sibling or a friend. One study showed that 36% of children in households with handguns knew where their parent (usually the father) keeps their gun and 25% admitted to handling the gun.
So why are the vast majority of handgun owners men? A long, hard barrel that reliably ejects a projectile. You can draw your own conclusions.
As far as protection of the home, a shotgun is far preferable to a handgun.

I will continue to ask that we keep this conversation in a Hawaii format.

Assume the best and ask questions.

Mauka it’s a no wonder that Rob can get upset from statements like that. What are you trying to turn this thread into? It’s about the permitting process here in Hawaii and how ridiculous I feel this system is. Gee, I understand you don’t like guns and would like for no person here in Hawaii to own one, you have that right and I respect it. On the other hand you should respect my right to have a gun regardless of what kind it is. You and the state of Hawaii both seem to agree but you both are wrong and our constitution says so.

This may come as shock to the anti-gun crowd here, but one can both enjoy shootings sports and water sports such as diving and snorkeling or ocean kayaking. They are not mutually exclusive. And just as an item of information, firearms designed to fire loose powder exclusively are exempt from the whole permit process. Therefore a 6 six shot 44 caliber revolver shooting 40 grains of FFG and a 430 grain slug does not take all the stupidity the same revolver in a 44 center fire does. Just as reliable, just as deadly, weighs about the same. Go figure.

my question is why does Hawaii feel this way about hand guns. if I over looked the answer in previous posts my apology

The way I see it - Hawaii had a change in direction and culture when firearms arrived - I believe it to be a British canon acquired by the indigenous peoples that made the mess in Io valley..... and so many other spots.

Local sensitivities about firearms (and the cultures that introduced them so much other destruction of the native way of life) may have been affected - with good reason imho
