Worms.... HDD/computer RIP
#11

That Java update is what got me and my wife - first two virus infections since about 2000... We cleaned with a procedure that used Malware bytes, and it seems to be all gone.

Sorry about the dead hard drive. Sometimes you can plug a drive into an external USB enclosure and read the data (costs about $30, sometimes less, available anywhere online like newegg.com or whatever).

Yep same "System Tool" virus problem on my end. Best Buy Geek Squad wants $200 to do a simple recovery. Pays to keep your Owner's manuals gang. Had to use my on-board disc recovery feature plus the recovery disc in the box is a nice back up. Virus takes over your system and wants a credit card number to clear up the problem. Yeh right I'm gonna do that (not). Always start with your Owners manual if you are attempting a system recovery (read carefully before proceeding). Downside is all of my favorites and data files go away. Good argument to back up your files at least weekly. Then make sure you are still running a good anti virus program and turn it on before you get on the internet. Scan for viruses when ever you are on the internet and afterwards as well.

System "Restore" did it for me, not affecting favorites or anything else. It just restores you computer to the day before the virus downloaded itself.

I'm alaways amazed when I hear people getting viruses on their computers. I run three different virus protection programs (AVG, Avast, Malwarebyte's) simultaneously and I never had a virus! One of the three always catches it before downloading.

I used to be amazed at people getting viruses since I got my first computer in 1987. But this virus was from an update bubble from my previously installed Java program. Apparently it's happening to others too.

System Tool virus - be wary of any update bubbles.

John....I didn't know you could run 3 different virus protections at the same time. I thought they would interfere with each other. Not true???

I'm no computer expert but they seem to work well together. AVG slows down the computer a bit but I would rather wait than have a virus![Big Grin][Big Grin][Big Grin]

It's always good to image your computer after you have it set up like you want it. Save the original image and then do another that you update periodically. Cheap insurance for the cost of an large external drive.
I only use one antivirus program (Avast) but several anti-malware programs (Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware and Spybot). Every now and then I will boot into safe mode, run rkill.com and then my anti-malware programs and then the antivirus. That routine has worked well for me.

On the MacBook Pro, a lot of models got a bad video chip. There was a class action suit, and Mac will fix it. No idea if that is your problem, but perhaps you are having display issues, Pam. I called Apple Care and they checked to see if mine was on the list of probably having that chip. It was.

I sent it in last week. Maybe the store in town can deal with those repairs, don't know. I shipped mine. I shipped it Fed Ex on Monday and they had it back Friday, which amazed me.

I have had some problems with the MacBook Pro since I bought it in 2007. While on Apple Care they replaced the display screen and other major stuff that went bad early for a pretty new computer. Also the second battery I've had is dead now. Also they replaced the chip but the problems are still happening. Might help you to look into the recalled chip issue though.

I love the Apples, but I don't like the quality of the parts they used for this.
I run no anti-virus, no malware program, and I have no problems. My old PC was a whole other story, always concerned about security.

You got a worm? I have a true story for you. I had a commercial customer in Hilo that called me that his computer stopped turning on. I got the computer and determined that the power supply was burned out. After removing the power supply I noticed a huge moth stuck in the fan. The moth kept the fan from turning and the power supply overheated and burned out.

So when I read that you had a worm...
