Pedestrian Deaths don't count on Private
#1
Roads?

This article was brought to my attention by a friend. Did any of you know Shelley Williams of Kona Seven Stars Coffee?

The article

http://starbulletin.com/2007/03/07/news/story04.html

states that deaths on private roads are not accounted for. Statistics are not kept? Is this true?

If statistics are not kept how does anyone who is contemplating buying into a sub standard sub division with private roads to be aware of their safety?

Mahalo for any information.

Mella, the article states that the death is not counted as a traffic fatality. HPD does track all accidental deaths. Those that happen on private property & roads are not put on the state traffic fatality counts, (and are not in most states) as those are not on public roads. Most states track traffic deaths on roads that they have juristiction on. This is so that they can get the data they need to request tax monies for improvements, obviously they do not have the ability to make improvements to private property.

Mella, this came up in a recent thread, you may not have been checking the forum at that time.

Thanks Les, yes I did see that thread and commented, however had forgotten about it.

Well I'm glad to know the deaths are counted in county death statistics that makes sense to me. I understand about statistics for fed or state vehicular deaths being weighed against dollars advocated for safety and improvements. Thanks!

My concern as a property owner in a private subdivision, how do we address speeding, driving intoxicated and or reckless driving and speeding? It never occurred to me to even think about these issues. How are these occurrences handled?

In Fla. there is a provision for private subdivisions with privately owned roads to petition the county to pass ordinance specifying that traffic laws will apply and be enforceable on the subdivision roads. Signs etc. must meet certain requirements to be enforcable. I wonder if that option exists in Hawaii.

I have found that Giant African Land Snails work fairly well at reducing speed & stopping teh "sliding" around our corner (for a short while...)
I know, GROSS, but very effective. (Kill 2 birds with 1....)
